But he got rich off that big fat Katz contract. Holland only took this job for the dough. He has been useless. Chia was better. At least he got 97 and 29 signed to max term deals.

and chia drafted way better. Hollands drafting since 2019 has been piss poor. No solid players.

What?
Omfg Chia was not better. He took us from a team that had an incredible foundation and lots of assets to a team that was capped out and was going to need a bit of luck to be a true cup contender. Holland didn’t get us there but Chia is the one that cut the hamstrings.

My maybe hot take is Coffey was the one who saw how exposed Woodcroft's system was in the playoffs and told him to swap to the box+1 zone.

Woodcroft tried and failed miserably at it, so they went out and got one of the few coaches available with extensive experience with it.

Who will also fail at it due to the players we have.

Reactions: Fixed to Ruin
November 3, 2022 - January 9, 2023 (14-15-4 record, but 6 of those wins came in an 8 game sample so it's really two brutal month long runs separated by a good 10 days)
December 3, 2021 - January 20, 2023 (2-11-2 record)
November 27, 2019 - January 2, 2020 (4-9-2 record)

Coaching has nothing to do with this. It happened to Tippett and caused his downfall. Woodcroft got the credit for turning it around but then it happened to him twice. The only difference is this year the Oilers didn't win a handful of October divisional games first. It's a month early. Remember they also got curb stomped in the first three weeks of the 2020 Bubble season until they got to play Ottawa 4 out of 5 games.

Ultimately the Oilers are #1 in shots, #1 in xGF, #1 in high danger scoring chances, #2 in CF% and #29 in PDO. It would have turned under Woodcroft. It will probably turn for Knoblauch. It'd probably turn with a potato in a suit.

But the core issue here is why things fall apart for 1-2 months in the early season every single year. I don't blame them for bringing in a McDavid guy for the long con. I don't blame them for pursuing a dead cat bounce. But I don't think a coach, or GM change, addresses this issue in the short term.

I honestly don't get the Oilers' management.

Like, what is the vision? The goal?

It would be nice if someone would clarify it, and not just more "there's something in the water" nonsense.

What's the plan for the next few years?
Same goal as always. Sell tickets. When the product on the ice is suffering and the revenue stream is put in danger of being threatened, make changes and start selling more hope. There hasn’t been a deeper plan than this through out Katz’ ownership tenure. There certainly hasn't been one with the goal of building a competitive team outside of tanking for draft picks.

If you’re talking about something as meaningless as who is going to be the GM next season then I think todays events indicate Paul Coffey is that guy.

I don’t think Gazzola is 100% correct about Coffey. I think Coffey has Katz’ ear but it doesn’t make sense that he’s running the team. That’s likely on Jackson, who not only was hired by Katz but also represents McDavid in a figurative sense.

Regardless, that’s still too many cooks in the kitchen. I think Holland still has some say in things too.

Thanks.

I doubt that Speedy has connections anymore but this sounds like something this organization would do.

I've said this many times. The biggest problem isn't the Lowes, MacTs, Chiarellis, Hollands, Nicholsons of the world or pick any coaching scapegoat of your choice. It's Katz and this Country Club atmosphere that he enables.

Yeah I know he's done good with the new arena and Ice District although through slimy means but he's a major problem when it comes to hiring hockey people. He has found a way to ruin the Hall era with the first DoD and is finding a way to ruin not one but two of the best players in the league Edmonton careers with a second DoD dawning on us as we speak. This Coffey thing wouldn't surprise me one bit and is par for the course. Jackson, Coffey and Knoblauch is the new version of OBC.
