Confirmed with Link: Jay Woodcroft and Dave Manson fired - no more Woody during NNN - Kris Knoblauch hired, Coffey as assistant

I also thought they might give a bit more time for your golden boy to turn it around. But I think the decision was made before the road trip, and the San Jose game was the straw that broke the camels back, regardless of last nights result. A bit unfortunate, as I think a lot of it rests on the players. They're becoming known as coach killers. But Jay had his issues as well, and I think lost respect and command of the room.
I wasn’t overly attached to Woodcroft as the coach. He was better than Tippett but had some critical flaws with his coaching that caused some of the problems this season.

So Dustin Schwartz survives. The best coach we’ve had in a while is fired and we hired Mcdavid’s OHL coach.

This is a disaster waiting to happen. Why tf would we hire Knoblauch? What credentials does he have at this point that make him qualified for the job besides history with Connor and Jackson?

f***ing brutal. Todd Nelson is a more accomplished coach than Koblauch is at this point, were better off bringing him back.
If we are looking at just accomplished, why not just get Hitchcock back here? He's still alive and kickin.

The Coffey thing is f***ed up. From the Red Wine Club to Assistant Coach. Gee, I wonder if he's friends with Katz.

And lets be real here. 99% of this board has absolutely zero clue on what kind of coach this new guy is and how he coaches, what systems he likes, etc. They are just going to flail their arms up over their keyboards and yell. Also, with zero solutions.

I am glad Woody is gone. No historic player production or PP to save his lack of accountability.

This org is unironically still hung up on Heatley turning them down.

They are absolutely obsessed with their reputation of being an undesirable option for high end players.

GM Nutz would probably just spend all his time tea-bagging the collective fanbase.
There's a realtor sign in Saskatoon with the name Clint Cockburn, he must be in the running for the next Oilers HC.

Cockburn is ready to burn your organisation to the ground

It is to an extend. A sure thing goal and a goal taken from a dangerous area but with no force and is a muffin are both taken as high danger.
It ain’t perfect I’ve looked into xGF before and things like cross crease passes prior to shot aren’t taken into account. But either way the analytics points to a team that should be winning and could normalize back to winning like we saw last night.

Spending a lot of time talking about how McDavid is running the show, the organization doing whatever it takes to make sure him and Draisaitl and possibly Nurse, the core, are happy more than anything. That Ekholm was possibly a Woodcroft guy who represented a change in defensive play and the boys didn't like it, because they don't want to have to play harder in their own end but would just rather keep it about offense. Upset that Barrie is gone for that reason too.

Pandering to the players they say. How McDrai won't have another opportunity to go to another team and have the level of pull and say in decision making that they have in Edmonton, so they have a pretty cool deal on the Oilers right now.

Basically I interpret that as the players are selfish little pricks who don't care about the actual team and just want their own little country club. This is all just radio speculation, and I'm not sold one way or the other. But if there's any truth to any of it, the organization is in a lose-lose situation.
The truth is probably somewhere in between.

A good article on Knoblauch:

Thanks for sharing. I watched Knoblauch coach in Kootenay and they were a wagon. Then he went to Erie and did the same albeit with great talent in both organizations. Strength of conviction to go this route versus recycling another established, veteran NHL coach.

Here's the essence below of what the Oilers are buying: a great communicator (standard option for modern era coaches) but the mindset and ability to change and adapt systems if not working. This latter is an area that hurt Woodcroft.

There were principles that he taught and wanted his team to stick to – “the four pillars of pace, possession, passing and positioning,” as Wolfe referred to them – but not so much a universal system. Rather than trying to come up with a one-size-fits-all style of play, Knoblauch made alterations each season.

“He was really good at, each year we had a different makeup of players, and we didn't necessarily play the exact same way every year,” Dave Brown said. “He put in systems that were suitable for that group of players. We changed and made tweaks to how we were going to play based on the strengths and weaknesses of our personnel.”

“The other thing I think he's really good at is watching and understanding when maybe the systems we're playing aren't suitable for what we're trying to do, and he can make those changes – whether that be happening in game or whether that be happening midweek in preparation for games ahead,” he added. Knoblauch was also described as a creative hockey mind who’s comfortable around the whiteboard.

This is leap of faith territory. In a similar situation, the Rangers opted for veteran NHL coach option over him as the internal organizational replacement option. It's a huge bet by Jackson who is firmly shaping the organization based on his professional relationships, experience, and beliefs.

I wasn’t overly attached to Woodcroft as the coach. He was better than Tippett but had some critical flaws with his coaching that caused some of the problems this season.
Wish I could bring some of your posts up when he got hired and had some initial success.:D

Anyhow, another good man lost his job today because of an inept GM and a delusional owner.

This move makes me nervous that McDavid is close to putting in a trade request so they hired his buddy to keep him happy.

This kinda stuff happens when you have the worst goaltending in the entire NHL.

Coaching won't change that unless they're going to a trap system which I doubt.

Deez Nutz will be the next GM
I once hosted a professor from Cambridge over his summer sabbatical, arranging any events/lectures that included grad students. My adviser made it clear that I should always introduce him using his title and full name, including his middle name. His name was Sir John Meurig Thomas. Didn't realize that the Royal Institution at Cambridge could act like a bunch of schoolboys.

Oh boy... Tail is definitely wagging the dog it seems. So we are firing Woodcroft and replacing him with McDavid's OHL coach? They could fire Ken Holland tomorrow and name McDavid's mom as GM and it wouldn't surprise me. Schwartz is still employed too I see. JFC, how much more ridiculous can this organization get?
