I had to research who that is. It would be a supremely out of the box and risky thing to hire a 65yo coach with no pro experience.Gardiner MaDougall please and.thank.you
Traditionally, teams that are heavily reliant on special teams to win games, do not succeed in the playoffs. Of course you want good special teams play and you probably need a bounce to make a long run... but 5v5 is where games that matter are won and lost. Since Nov 15th, the Avs are 16th in 5v5 GF%, in xGF% they are 17th. They are pretty much the very definition of average where it counts the most over the last month. Some stats to throw at you:

In other words, Bednar is still coaching the team well. Colorado has actually increased their goal output this month, despite one stinkin' power play tally.
But context matters. In last night's snoozefest, a functional power play could've changed the game. Instead, it cost them the game, thanks to the shortie allowed.
I don't think he would accept at his age , he's a Maritimer who lives a good life here. He’s a coaching machine.I had to research who that is. It would be a supremely out of the box and risky thing to hire a 65yo coach with no pro experience.
What I'm seeing here is that Wedgewood has killed the powerplay. Some stats to throw at you:

I suppose if there was a guy I'd consider replacing Bednar with, it's possibly Bruce Boudreau. I've always liked Bruce, problem with him is that he really has a hard time containing his temper when things start going south and he just goes off on the players, and it's pretty clear at some point they tune him out. He's proven he's savvy enough with systems that he can employ a more conservative defensive system, or go full run-and-gun (which I think he'd prefer, but he doesn't really force players to fit his system). Not that Bednar is a bad coach... but I don't think a change wouldn't be the worst thing (and I don't think it will happen this year). A new voice, a new system, sometimes some freedom in play... these things can help teams. Personally, I really wouldn't mind a hardass, not a players' coach sort of voice. Swing the pendulum and get a completely different style in here. Wouldn't even mind a trap and slow the game down sort of coach. Not that it necessarily fits the roster, but it gives a different viewpoint and focus for the team. Learn to play a different way for a while, then you can amp back up the north/south offensive style again.
I personally wouldn't care all that much as to who it is... this would be a short timer. A guy who is here for maybe 2-3 seasons as a last gasp. If it doesn't work, so be it. But something different could really help this team. Probably alleviate some pressure and just give them a new toy. We're towards the end and there is only so many more levers to pull. It needs to happen if this year doesn't lead to success.I suppose if there was a guy I'd consider replacing Bednar with, it's possibly Bruce Boudreau. A good trap guy would probably be McLellan but OH GOD NOT HIM.
Sadly, if he wasn't such a goddamned slimeball, Quenneville would likely be the guy who'd get the most out of his roster, but it's probably a moot point because no way would the Avs pay what he'll eventually be getting once he returns behind an NHL bench.
Bednar has his faults but this team has no business being competitive against some of the top teams of the West. Replacing Bednar because they have a better candidate who can get more out of a different style of play is valid.FTR I will make a not-so-crazy prediction and say that it's more than likely both MacFarland and Bednar will be gone at season's end. I just don't see this team making anything remotely resembling a deep playoff run, and I really don't think a first or even second round exit will be accepted...unless there are even more devastating injuries down the road.
Here we go with this thread again.....
Since their bad 1-6 start of the season they are 17-9 with very bad goaltending and now that they have better goaltending most of the team is sick.
Maybe, just maybe, we should give them a few games with new goaltending AND the players that are actually on the ice not being sick. I am not even asking for the injured players to be back as it seems the Avs will always have a few out.

BRBif they like to have orgies with amputated clowns.
Gallant would be fantastic (for 1.5 seasons).Yes, him.
My picks would be:
1- Quenneville
2- McLellan
3- Gallant
Hey he might last longer here. I don't see Sakic or CMac getting mad at himGallant would be fantastic (for 1.5 seasons).
Just wanted to let you know that I wasn't laughing at you. Here we go with this thread again.....

And that is my point...let's see what we have first. Their first period play is certainly a big issue but overall I don't think they have been playing bad in the 2nd and third periods. They very often out played teams in those periods. They need to have better starts. Playing from behind takes a toll on the players. Yes it can be argued that it is a coach issue but I still say let's see what we have with new goalies and the team under the weather before we send the coach to the pasture. It is too early to say how much better the goaltending will be. Blackwood has had struggles in the NHL more than success. Wedgewood was run out of Dallas and Nashville couldn't get rid of him fast enough. Both are likely better than what George turned into here, but how much better and is it good enough are still questions.
Of the 18 wins, only 7 have comes against teams currently in the playoff position... and 10 losses against teams in playoff position. They haven't played good competition well this year. Which is a pretty bad sign.
3) I don't want to revive the Sacco 'Didn't start on time' meme,
but this team starts every damn game and every damn period like they are still asleep. After a while, that falls on the coach.
Has Bednar lost the room? Almost certainly.
You can see by the expression on everyone's face that Joe Sacco never had the room.
