In other words, Bednar is still coaching the team well. Colorado has actually increased their goal output this month, despite one stinkin' power play tally.

But context matters. In last night's snoozefest, a functional power play could've changed the game. Instead, it cost them the game, thanks to the shortie allowed.

Traditionally, teams that are heavily reliant on special teams to win games, do not succeed in the playoffs. Of course you want good special teams play and you probably need a bounce to make a long run... but 5v5 is where games that matter are won and lost. Since Nov 15th, the Avs are 16th in 5v5 GF%, in xGF% they are 17th. They are pretty much the very definition of average where it counts the most over the last month.
