Retention on Chychrun. Retention buy-out on Korpisalo. White is not off the books until 2027-28. You can see where this is going if all this comes to fruition.

Jeff Chychrun has to be the thinnest skinned human alive. Someone asked who would they move at the TDL, and I tweeted, Tarasenko (if not signed), Kubalik and Chyrchun, so he blocked me.

He must search his son's name hourly...

If he was a good player he would simply look better.

I dono. I think a lot of it may be nerves. He must be a little disappointed. He wanted to come here. And stay here. And it quickly kinda gone down the drain.

Good players can look less good in the wrong situation. He is an offensive-minded defensemen on a team with many offensive minded players and he isn't even the biggest threat on the backend. Not only does he not have the support to take the risks he takes, he doesn't provide the support others need to take risks.

That's wild,

for context, at 5v5

Under DJ
166 mins with JBD
113 with Hamonic
83 with Chabot
54 with Zub
49 with Sanderson

Under Martin
208 mins with Chabot
148 with Hamonic
79 with Brannstrom
64 with Sanderson
44 with JBD

He was playing his natural side a lot more under DJ,
It did seem like they were really trying to push him on the right side. Probably to see the potential fit ??

so lots of minutes with Hamonic and lots of minutes on his off hand where he clearly struggles and with a partner that doesn't compliment his style.

he's been crap but its not like he's had a great opportunity to be successful.

Which is more a failing on Dorion for acquiring him, we needed a RD, not an offensive minded LD.

I didn't think he was great defensively under DJ when he was playing his strong side but at least he was putting up points. The odd part is usually playing your offside is more conducive to scoring,

Chychrun should be playing LD. He is talented and can play in anyone's top 4. But it should be on his natural side. Enough silliness.

And now he's stuck playing with f..ing Travis Harmonic on a 3rd pairing of a bottom 7 team in the league

He has checked out no doubt

It isn't malicious necessarily, he might just not want to see anything negative about his son in his feed so he blocks anything negative adjacent. It isn't like he's a public figure or something.

It's probably better to just buy him out than pay what we need to to offload him (with rentention).
Yes, I should have said "buy-out" for Korpisalo.

I was just reflecting on the collection of ideas that people talk about in here and what the impact (total $s) of all those different ideas would be if they were all implemented. That's the real point here, not buyout versus retention when it comes to Korpisalo.

If we retain on Chychrun which some are suggesting, buy out Korpisalo and already have White's buyout dollars on the books, we are pretty much back to where we've been with DEAD Cap.

Don't retain on Chychrun.

At least White has a $625,000 cap credit for next year (just next year), so we'd basically have 0 dead cap if for 2024-2025 we bought out both Korpi and Hamonic. Obviously it'll get worse in the years after.

It's not ideal even with the rising cap, but what are we going to do? Give up more assets to offload another terrible goalie contract where we retain regardless? Pin our hopes on him to be good next year? There's no perfect solution.

It's funny because Dorions supposed power moves (summer of Dorion etc.) were basically all the exact wrong kind of players: floating winger, offensive LD, Dadynov (useless), veteran goalies (useless). The only exception being Giroux.

Even the moves for good players were idiotic. Dorion honestly never ceases to amaze me in terms of his incompetence. If someone wrote a book about this era of the Sens (2012-ish to 2024) it'd be a hilarious read.

Yes, my intent wasn't to come up with a solution. I was just framing the problem at hand.

People talk about solutions for each individual situation, but it's the big picture with all the pieces considered in total that's important.

As an example, people mention Korpisalo's buyout as being $1.3 m, but the cap hit in 2026-27 is $1.83 m and in 2027-28 it's $2.3 m. For those 2 years, White's buyout has a cap hit of $875 k as well.

Dorion didn't have to do much to get Giroux. Ottawa is his home in the offseason and it was well rumored he was open to coming here to play.

If it makes matters any better the cap will probably be around $100 mil by then. It still sucks but that's the price of having Dorion go free agent shopping.

If we sign a good RD, and another goalie, I'd wonder what the impact of those moves would be on the extra cap space from a rising cap?
