How exactly did Chychrun flounder?

He's done fairly well here honestly. The thing is he just isn't the type of defensemen most people thought he was when he was traded. Some people were saying he's a legit top pair defensemen, even potentially Norris caliber because he got votes one year. He got votes because he scored a lot of goals and produced but he was no defensive stalwart.

That's just not who he is. He's a solid offensive defensemen who played a ton of minutes on a bad Arizona team and put up points.

On a good team you want a guy like Chychrun on your 2nd pair with a good defensive defensemen who can carry the load defensively. He's a good #3 who can step in a play more minutes if a top pairing guy is injured. His shot is really his best attribute. Good shot and he jumps in offensively very well.

Who’s giving us this “stay-at-home beast” sd why are they doing it?

It's wishful thinking.

With the new PP set-up, offensive D are needed less than ever in comparison to competent stay-at-home defensemen.

The number of teams interested in trading for a good shutdown defensemen is 32. Number looking for an OFD to run their PP is much much lower.

Hopefully teams are convinced Chychrun's defensive issues are a Sens problem and not something he'll carry forward to a new team.

I would try a three way trade IF we have to move Chychrun.

Weegar to us, Chychrun to another team, picks and prospects to Calgary.

I don’t know man, everyone on the team looks shit defensively this year.
Seemed fine the games he was in last year.
Guy is legit top pair, not an elite one but a top pair nonetheless.

In general the group looks bad defensively but Zub/Sanderson have been much much better than Chabot and Chychrun on the defensive side of things. Sanderson breaks a lot of plays and does a good job winning puck battles, same with Zub.

Chychrun and Chabot have made some glaring mistakes every game.

Even Sanderson and Zub have not been perfect but at least you see they're focused on trying to limit chances against. Can't really say that about the others.

I'd argue our best defensive defensemen after Sanderson and Zub is Brannstrom.

I like Chabot more as a player, but Chych is just more well rounded. Big shot on the PP, which Chabot doesn't have and Chych can actually play on the PK, which TC doesn't do. I haven't looked around but I don't think there are many #1 dmen making big money that aren't on the PK or at least then be an absolute force on the PP.

Saw an article claiming the Oilers are possibly offering Cody Ceci + for Chychrun. Lol that article is like a book report written by some kid who didn’t actually read the book.

I'll save everyone the time. Based on the Pagnotta article about Chychrun, this writer is saying maybe the Oilers could offer Ceci, Broberg and a first, but that that's still probably not enough. It's a glorified HFBoards post.

He's a super #3. But I also think he's a solid top pair guy when paired with someone that is the defensive consciousness of the pair. And that's pretty standard.

As a fanbase we're kind of complaining about the defensive shortcomings of our offensive defencemen. Both Chychrun and Chabot. What we need is a Zub quality or better guy on that right side.

A guy that's elite at both ends is a HoF candidate which i don't think either Chychrun or Chabot is.

Can’t believe people saying chabot and chychrun are pretty much the same and just keep one or the other, doesn’t really matter.
Anyway, as long as management sees the reality.

the reality of Chychrun:

Often injured, a terrible +/_ record. Very low PIM.. reflective of a guy who does not fight or play hard.

NOW... 4.6 M CAP.. but is due 5.4 M for 2023/2024 and then 7 M for 2024/2025.

He has 10 team no move... which starts becoming an issue as he gets closer to FA.

This season and next will cost the Sens 12.4 M or 6.2 M per year.. a full 1.6 M higher than his AAV.

Move him now, and you give his new team 1.33 seasons. So a contending team may have him for 2 playoff runs.

His demand for a new contract is going to be 8 x 8.. So in 2024/2025 you will have 2 guys at 8 plus million, 1 guy at 7 M and 1 guy at 4.6 M on your top 4. And then from 2025/2026outwards, you will have 3 guys at 8 M (plus) and Zub at 4.6M.

Not realistic. Not with Klevin coming and not with 3-4 forwards still needing contracts (Pinto, Greig, Grioux replacement, Tarasenko replacement, Kubalic replacement)
