Defense pairings. I have always thought that consistency between D pairings is important. To improve reading off each other and to learn your partners tendencies in game situations. . I think this is at least as important than the chemistry forwards develop over time. At the start of the road trip DJ said they'd were starting things off with Holden at that time to get Chychrun accustomed to the chaotic style the play/systems.. I added the word chaotic there.

Chychrun's 5v5 Toi with various partners since he arrived.

When Trailing 5v5 it looks like this

When you do all situations or special teams these numbers change.
Is it time to try a top 4? IE putting your 4 best together and feed them more icetime.

I don't know where Chychrun fits in a 1 thru 7 ranking but I would have to think its closer to the top than the bottom and so far he is being paired significantly more with our 6/7 D...

Last night he was paired a lot with Chabot when we were trailing.

It just seems we haven't got a fit yet and the fit they keep trying the most is with a bottom pair D..

The Chabot - Chychrun pairing last night was not good. Don't know where Chychrun ultimately belongs, and he certainly should get as many minutes as possible, but so far the best fit for him has been with Brannstrom IMO.

Well it messes up the possibilities for different pairings when Sanderson - Hamonic is set in stone. DJ paints himself into corners sometimes and others there are perfectly logical paths to take and he goes into the wilderness and runs around.

Chychrun is even better than I expected. Big body, plays the puck really well with his stick defensively, and isn't afraid to jump up in the play. Elite shot, too.

I still think Sanderson will be our best defenseman. He has top 5 written all over him.

But this D should be nasty next year. Chychrun, Chabot, Zub, Sanderson. Let the battle for the bottom pairing begin.

So this does prove we are the worst defensive Team in the league. Thank god for our PP, especially Batherson and Stu that we are not sitting 2 points below Coyotes

Jakob has only played 9 games with the Sens. It always takes time for a new player to get comfortable with his surroundings.
Let's wait until there has been a bigger sample size.

This is a fair take for sure but if we are evaluating the coaching staff and cant use the earlier parts of the season for one reason or another we should be able to use an elite players play dropping a bit

this isnt a stepan type situation where we can say oh he was old so he was bound to drop off

Jakob has been in Ottawa for 18 days, and has played 9 games and played with different d-partners, getting used to different systems and players will take Jakob time to catch on. I am sure it's been a whirlwind. Lets give Jakob a larger sample size before someone starts critiquing his statistical performance.

its not a critique of chychrun, its a critique of our coaching staff and our 'system'.

No it seems to me like you are looking at Chychruns stats and let the kid play a bit before you do a hatchet job on his play. When Jakob has played more games we can look at Jakob's stats more. After 9 games of a player coming into town is statistically irrelevant, Lol

We have had a goalie playing with a .850 save percentage since Jakob got here. Give these stats time to play out, not just 9 games.

I don't have the exact numbers but I think Sanderson's numbers aren't that bad, given he is a rookie and a very young one
Yes the coaching staff have done a super job at coaching Sanderson this year and have developed him really well.

Sanderson, like Redden, Karlsson, and Chabot is so talented, he would have developed on any team with any coaches.

I'd like to see our next coaching staff work with Chabot on sharpening his defending.

So you don't want to give the coaching staff any credit for his development? Sanderson is just magically playing well?

Yes. If he was on any of the other 31 teams he'd also be playing well.

I'm not saying they don't help by working with him, but just that he's so talented he'd develop similarly on any team. He just needed experience.

The way this coaching staff has handled many players has been outstanding. As evidenced by our other 6 or 7 young players that are having amazing seasons. They have a great way of developing through coaching those players. They are putting up career best numbers. Surely that must have something to do with coaching? The fact that our power play system is ranked 7th must be due to our coaching system? or no credit there as well? Our PK system is ranked 7th in the league. That also has to do with coaching.
The only two areas I have for concern is goaltending. The .850 save percentage makes any defensive system look bad.
The other is we need 1 or 2 physical players on the back end.
When we add Norris next year and better goaltending and their play will improve.
