Obviously his cannon of a shot is something this blue line has sorely missed since like…Gonchar, but his stick when defending the rush is incredible.

I remember Dom from the Athletic posted a highlight reel of Chychrun after the trade and I thought “this was all just poke checks.” Well, stopping a rush and turning the puck the other way with a quick smart pass like the one on Timmy’s first goal is invaluable in the NHL, extremely excited going forward with him, Sandy, Chabot, Zub and Branny as our core

Chych makes everyone look better, less pressure on the d-corps. Defensively sound, Offensive is on point, right personality for our group, has potential to exceed, perfect fit for what we are building here. He wanted to come here and be here and is excited and hometown boy! He will be a superstar here!

Chabby is great but leaned on too much. Will be nice that Chych can give him a few shifts off.

Sandy is amazing rookie and has exceeded expectations and can take a deep breath and just keep playing his game.

Zub is monster who does not get phased but relied upon as a number 2 way too much and his game will only get better.

Branny, expectations were so high on this kid because of PD and the Stone trade. He is smaller defender and thrown into the firestorm of Ottawa's defense without a chance to succeed. I hope he finds his way or find a place we're he can.

Hammer is a good 7th defensemen if you can get him a league min next year. He brings a little bit of everything but is showing his age.

In hindsight it's pretty shocking that there was a sizeable contingent of fans who didn't want Chychrun because of wrong handedness.
It was probably also tied in with trading Greig or the likes AND a 1st round pick for another LD that's injury prone.

I don't have an issue having an abundance of quality LD when paying only a 1st and two 2nds but it was a tough pill to swallow to have to give up a top prospect + lottery 1st + 2nd + 2nd to get Chychrun and unload Zaitsev.

Pretty much this. The reason the Chychrun trade was so good was because we didn't have to give up Pinto or Grieg. Both of those guys are developing so well for us that it isn't worth getting rid of some up and coming forward depth to bank on someone in the first round who might not be ready as quickly as Pinto or Grieg are.

Words cannot describe how happy I am that this is the player we got. He's so perfect it hurts, honestly... Lalimes Martian on Twitter said it best - this dude is a friggin man missile. Built like a Sherman tank and moves around like Porsche.

Someone please tell me I'm wrong. The Sens have a better D-Corps than the Leafs do right now.

They have better depth to be sure. Won't argue that. But I'm taking our top 5 dmen (Hamonic at #5) over theirs right now quite easily.
Agreed on everthing you said however in no way is Hamonic a/our #5. Thats objectively Branny. Hamonic is our 6th, Holden our 7th.

I really like our top 5 D now. This is why we control games and out shoot oppenents, which wasn't the case in previous years, or this year when 1 or 2 of Chabot, Zub, or Sandy was injured.

Next year, I hope they bring back Hamonic as our #6, as the guy is such a warrior, eventually to be supplanted by Kleven.

JBD could be a future #6, maybe #5 if he cuts down on mistakes, but doesn't have much upside, and has no offensive skill. Thomson will be a fringe NHLer at best.

Have a feeling we will be trading some of our prospects (Sokolov, Thomson etc) to tanking teams for their veteran 3rd liners next year…

I mean, Hamonic plays on the second pair (at least until they ease Chychrun into the top 4) and plays on average about 3 mins more a game, so objectively might be the wrong choice of words...

I always think of the Russian Five, and IIRC all of them were left hand shots. That didn't seem to hold them back much. The Russians in their heyday never worried much about that - they just sent ridiculously skilled five man units out there to flow.

Maybe another way to think of it is this - there's a minute left, and we're down by a goal. Are you worried about who shoots which way, or are you just trying to get your six most skilled guys out on the ice?

I could see Chychrun becoming my second favorite Senator in a very short amount of time. Always liked the player even on a crappy team, but to see his personality shine here while playing meaningful hockey is showing how great of a human he is.

And I still can't believe we snagged the best dman on the market. Dorion has my respect from now on.

I can’t stop watching his goal from last night…Can’t remember the last time we had such a laser beam shot from the backend
I must have watched it 20 times. You can't see the puck leave his stick, it's insane. It just clinks on the post and it's in.

I'll admit that he's much better than I thought on my limited viewings of him. Unless it's extra adrenaline, but I doubt that's what it is. He's like the perfect prototype of what you want in a dman.

Hey all! Coyotes fan here. Don’t want to comment on who won or loss the trade. That’s irrelevant to me. Just wanted to come by and wish Chych well! He’s a Norris candidate that has dealt with way too many distractions. He loves his teammates and they love him. Feel like part of the reason he asked out was because his friends kept getting traded and he’s a bro type. Keep him happy which shouldn’t be too hard. Don’t even need to discuss his skill set because it will be evident here soon. Hopefully he stays healthy. Everyone has their doubts and they’re completely valid. Good luck the rest of the way!

If we have Chych, Chabot and Sandy all playing 20 minutes on their own pairings, it works out nicely. Let Brann play on his offside, and we can live with that.
I can't find precise stats but the average team takes 9.17 pims per game (so 18.34 pims per game total). If you remove fighting majors, that goes down to 17.68mins/game.

I won't go through all the stats, but based on what we have so far we can probably say that 12-15mins per game are not at 5-on-5. In those 12-15 mins, those top 3 guys are more likely to play - they are the only 3 D who will play PP (say, 5:30min/game, or 2:30-3:30min per guy). We PK a similar amount - slightly more - so lets say that our 6 D take an even distribution of PK minutes - approx. 2m per guy. That leaves anywhere for 30 seconds to 3:30 remaining, which could be 4-on-4, 3-on-3, 5-on-3, 3-on-5, or any of the above with the goalie pulled. My guess would be that the three guys above would take a higher proportion of those minutes, too.

So let's say each of those guys plays an average of 15-16 at ES, 3 on the PP, 2 on the PK, that brings us to 20-21 mins each with a couple of extra minutes to fill out.

Basically, you would have games where you have at least 4-5 of your DMen in the 19-22 min range, and then others where you would have your top 3 guys play between 20-25 mins and your bottom 3 in the 16:30 - 18:30 range.

Typically, that type of rough minute distribution is what you see on the best teams.

Cheers. I hope we give you two late first rounders and you get superstars with both of them :thumbu: tons of respect for all AZ/PHX diehards.

Wasn't it Yotes management who told Jakob they wanted to trade him?

You can really tell he's happy to be here and I think some of that credit goes to the Coyotes. They probably could have gotten slightly more from another team, but recognized this was best for Jakob. He turns an up and coming team into a serious contender and has roots in Ottawa. Little things like that go a long way when talking about real people and that guy has been uncertain about his future for a year and a half with constant speculation. That's hard for anyone and thankfully Arizona found him the best situation to "pay him back"

Wasn't it Yotes management who told Jakob they wanted to trade him?

They asked him if he wanted to stay through a rebuild or go elsewhere. Neither side was coming up with ultimatums
