The whole point of negotiating a contract early for the Sens is to get a potential discount, like with Stu. Sandy has shown a lot of promise, but how is getting Sanderson at 8 mil per a discount? He'd pretty much have to enter the top-10 d-man in the league in a couple of seasons.

Rising cap, Sanderson is a safe bet to be the best dman on this team and Chabot makes 8. If sanderson takes another step next season he will be in the 9-10 range

Most of those are overpaid obviously,
Makar at 9, that’s fair for both sides.

7.5x8 seems reasonable and fair for both sides. Please lock this stud up asap before the season starts.

Got to think with a rising cap that the new batch of signings will generally increase. Would the top defensemen in the NHL get the same contract or more if they signed a new contract in a couple of years?

His comparables are: Heiskanen, on the high end, at 10.37% of the cap and Jaccob Slavin, on the low end, at 7.07%. Quinn Hughes at 9.63% is probably a highly similar contract outcome.
Would love him right at Hughes deal but for 8 years. Hughes has the points to jsutify the contract, but if we bridge Sanderson and let him score a bit more, we'll have a fun problem in determining his next deal.

He's a core piece and probably our number 1 Dman in a year or two. Gotta lock him up for 8 years, anywhere between 7-8 will be great value. Please don't bridge this stud, even if we have to pay a little more to get a max deal done. Need to get it done this summer though, the longer we wait the higher the cost will be down the line.

The bet you're placing on a solid offer to Sanderson is as much about his potential as it is about the cap undertaking a dramatic jump after this season. We are likely to see a minimum 10% increase in the near future and RFA's are going to prey on that freed up cap space.

Sando at 8 million will feel like a steal when lesser players are commanding around the same or more.

So what would it translate to, anywhere from around 6 to 8.5 M AAV? That makes sense I guess, if we get him for between 7-8 I'd be happy! If he demands much more than that maybe consider a bridge deal...

We may need to trade Chabot?

We’re going to have 3 so I definitely hope we can afford 2, and of course this is before we pick up EK with $3.5 retained.

So want to know if a team has ever gone this way before? you could legitimately claim that the Sens have FOUR #1 defencemen (all at $8 million/year. ) if we went all in
I kind of so badly want to see this…I could forgive Pierre if it all went terribly wrong lol

Wild that Maccelli and John got first place votes. No way Jake should be under those two.

That would be too much money allocated to 4 defensemen. Too much flash and not enough bash. Also we need some more physical players at the defensive position and at the forward position.
And we would still need to upgrade our goalie and replace DeBrincat at top 6 forward.

We def can afford him at 8m since it wont kick in until the following season, not this upcoming one. Cap is projected to jump 5-7m then, and reach 90m+ in a couple seasons if not next offseason. So he def would fit, but if we can manage to get an extension done this summer then I think we can get him for a bit cheaper at 7-7.5x8. I wouldn't be upset if he gets a similar deal as Chabot though, very likely he'd live up to that contract a year or two into that deal barring any significant injuries.

I wouldn’t go long term with him. I’d offer him 6M x 3 next year and then pay him market value after that for 8 years. Locks him up for 12 more years rather than him being a UFA at 30 wanting another 8 year deal.
That would be a huge mistake, the elevated price you'd incur once he is in his prime coupled with the cap rise of 10m+ by then would increase his price tag significantly. Better to lock him up now on a team friendly deal for the majority of his prime and have that cost certainty for your roster during our contention window than leave it hanging in the air. Then we'll see how well he's still playing by age 30 and decide where to go from there.

Ok I still think we need some physical defensemen who are tough to play against in our top 4. Vegas had big physical defensemen. We will need that ingredient to be successful.

Thats a valid point, lets hope Kleven can make the roster sooner rather than later to provide that physical edge, and hopefully Sanderson can develop that aspect as well once he fills out and settles in as our top Dman. Contrary to the perception, our dmen are not small at all, but they need to have the coaching that emphasize playing a more physical game. Chyckrun, Chabot and Zub are all 6'2 and around 200lb. Sandy is 6'3 195lb but still probably needs a couple more seasons to reach physical and strength maturity. Kleven is 6'4 205. They are all pretty big, but need to be taught to play big as well
