Telling Muzzin to leave his hometown Cup Contender to go to a team that doesn't even have an NHL arena? No GM is swinging that.

If he is still capable of playing next year, he is playing here and we will go from there. If he is not, then his contract doesn't matter anyways. We will use his LTIR money to replace him.
Let's hope.

This muzzin trade and sign is turning out to be a disaster…rugged d men with a lot of playoff miles on them at 30 yrs doesn’t turn out well because injuries are inevitable. Wish him the best for health

He may chose to call it quits soon. I doubt we see him again until the playoffs and one more major injury/concussion until he goes the way of Joffrey Lupul.

Hate to see the guy get hurt but this may help with the cap mess.
He looked off before bumping his head. Looked like he had skate guards on when Hoffman scored.

If he's actually concussed which it looks like he might be, we need TWO top 4 d-men and a top 6 forward instead of just one top 4 d-man and top 6 fwd. Dubas has a lot of work to do if he wants this team to be a contender.

Disaster indeed. Tobias Bjornfot (the first round pick to LA) is soon to be 21 and already looking like a two-way top 4 defenseman in the NHL meanwhile Muzzin hurt again, hurt against the Habs last year, hurt against the BlueJackets two years ago and overall the team hasn't won anything with this "win now" move.

Daunting task it'll be to get out of this dead money and still find a top 4 replacement plus the 4th top 4 D man they already needed.

Not to mention LA also acquired Sean durzi whose still on his ELC and who is second in defencemen in scoring on the team with 14 pts in 32 gp….

He's gotta LTRetire.

I suspect he is gonna get his bonus July 1st and then move him on to a team like Arizona which enjoys the cap hit with him on IR getting paid by insurance.

Imagine his career ends on his birthday. :(

I honestly hope he retires. He is so undependable for so many reasons. He is a shell of who he used to be when he first got to Toronto. Looks like he has zero desire to compete. Gets run hard into the boards and no push back. I think he will want to get paid somehow. The Leafs putting him on LTIR this year could help make room for a replacement, but there go some assets. Not good.

I'm a big Jake Muzzin fan... but when we signed that contract, I think most on this board would agree that it was likely going to turn sour before it's completion. This isn't TJ Brodie who's success is basically all driven by putting his stick in the right spot. This is a guy who plays physical, and guys like him don't tend to age well.

I fear that with this latest injury; that time may now be here. He's looked off all this year, or at least, looked like he's playing not to get hurt, and 2 concussions in a short period of time are not good. Muzzin is a very important part of this D, and even if he has a timeline for return in the neighborhood of the playoffs, I don't see how you, as a hopeful cup contender, go in knowing you're 1 Jake Muzzin injury away from your bottom 4 being comprised of Dermott, Holl, Sandin, Liljegren and Lyubushkin.

Personally, I'd hope that Dubas seizes this as an opportunity to "Get out of cap hell free" card -- and maybe pursues a defenceman of the quality that he was unable to pursue prior.

In an ideal world, probably 1 with term, and figure out how to move Muzzin in the summer. His full NTC could of course pose some challenges with that.

Bang on post.

You could see decline in his game last year, this year he never skated really well off the get go and he always looked laboured, could be the head, the groin or hip or a combo of the these things

Tough way for the game to force you out no one wants to go out on their shield. I just hope the guy can get back to a modicum of health and have a good and happy life with his family.

Sucks but Robidas Island is calling!

great post, I'd love to add a big mobile guy with offense, but Dubious is running out of trade chips unless he wants to start digging into the farm and waiving around Knies or someone like him, I really think that kid's going to be a star. He looked great with the USA

I turned the game off before the hit (what the f*** was that!?) and had to Yt the hit. It looked bad.

Terrible thing to happen to him, that’s the second bad hit where he fell awkward and smashed his head, the first was the Dubois hit against CBJ, and he hasn’t looked the same since then.

Two concussions in six weeks and you have to shut him down for the year right? I know he hasn’t been good (for longer than people are remembering) and the Leafs need every dollar they can get, but let’s not forget that he’s a guy with a wife and a family and that’s what’s really important.

I think his days of helping the team more than he hurts them are gone, but it’d be a dick move to just ship him off to Arizona say ‘thank you, now get out.’.

Put him on LTIR, collect the savings and distribute them into another D (come on, Chychrun), and keep an eye on him. If he can’t ever play again, then ship his money and offer him a vanity position with the team.

You can pay his bonus on July 1st and trade him to Arizona and they can put him on LTR for the remainder of his career but he can just hang out in Woodstock if he wants, he doesn't need to physically be in Arizona.

When an older big man is near da end these things tend to occur .. sad but true .. father time has reduced his wheels and da brain can only take you so far as an experienced vet .. he knows what to do but legs are not there like before .. Leafs are to blame here as playing him with Holl made da aging occur faster .. he had to work too hard to make up for Holl's errors past 2 seasons .. we should have been able to get this year and part of next season from Muzzy but now it appears doubtful .. sad situation and hope for best from Muzzy .. good idea to LTIR him balance of season as he need a couple months to try to heal

Exactly.

If he can play - not if he wants to but if he can - he deserves to be in the line up. Even at his decreased level of play he’s still a 4D.

But if he can’t, and he can still get his money, then the only thing to do is to shed the hit. Let him chill on the golf course or on his boat while making sure he gets his money.

Terrible thing to happen to him, but it’s all about what’s best for the team and his health.

He's got a degenerative hip before taking the head trauma into account, for his health, he should just sit out.

I would argue that he's at best been a 3rd pairing defenseman this year, not nearly what he used to be. Just seems like he injured his groin against the Habs and came back a different guy.

why the Leafs need the cap relief and the insurance pay's off his contract, unless of course they're willing to deal us a 1st and Chychrun, hmmm!

Yea, Arizona gets near $6M in cap hit to hit the floor, insurance takes care of the $$ after we pay the bonus, it's not a bad little contract for them.
