ANAHEIM, Calif. —
Jake DeBrusk jumped back into the Bruins lineup Sunday night against the Ducks, a day after the right winger was benched against the Kings for being late to a team meeting.
DeBrusk owned up to the infraction and is focused on the future.
“I think obviously it was one of those things that we have a high standard on this team and we have a higher standard than people give us credit for and I broke a team rule and I understand that there’s consequences with that and I own up to it completely and I let the guys down,” DeBrusk said after helping the Bruins to a 3-1 win over the Ducks. “I wanted to join them in LA [Saturday] and having to watch really sucked and I felt it and I just wanted to do anything I could to help the team out today.”
DeBrusk, scoreless through three games, played with
Matt Poitras and
Morgan Geekie on the right side. DeBrusk had life in his legs and several good chances, including a breakaway. He also picked up an assist on Poitras’s second goal — the game-winner.
Montgomery said his message to DeBrusk regarding the one-game punishment was a simple one.
“Yesterday’s over with, we worry about today and he gets a chance here to come back and help us win hockey games,” said the coach.
Montgomery indicated DeBrusk dealt with the consequences of his actions “like a pro.”
“I was just kind of focused on tonight,” said DeBrusk. “Like I said earlier, I am proud to be Bruin and proud of the standards that we have here.”
Montgomery said the benching was not a warning to the team, in particular the younger players.
“No, there’s just a standard that we believe in here and when that standard isn’t met, there’s repercussions but yesterday’s over with again, it’s a new day and we’re moving forward,” said Montgomery.
