One of the ways that the game has really changed over the last couple decades or so is in how much it costs to equip and put a kid through the variety of competitive travel leagues. A rough guess maybe a decade ago would be about $15,000 a year starting around 8, 9, 10 years old. For those who don't have parents with a lot of money it's pretty damned unaffordable and if you have 2,3 kids then..... That kind of lucre is pretty much unaffordable to all but kids with professional types of parents (doctors, lawyers, corporate execs etc. A reason why despite the efforts of the NHL and other hockey organizations to get more players of color into the game has kind of failed is pretty much right there. It is by far of all the major sports the most expensive one to play.
