Gustafsson might be the best sub 1 million player I have ever seen not on an ELC.

So often I see people assert that we can’t question NHL GMs/coaches because they are professionals and they know better. Meanwhile I’m watching Erik Gustafsson skate around for league minimum because the most valuable hockey franchise passed on him to sign Reaves+Klingberg for 5x the price
I think many or even most NHL coaches are very risk averse. And Gustafsson plays a pretty risky style. Lavi gets him. Gus is a terrific fit here.

Are you new here?
I am from Ottawa and a Sens fan...but I've been intrigued by Alexis and his development so from time to time I peek into some threads on this board to see what the fans say etc.

I am also partaking in some fantasy hockey for the first time ever this year and I have a few Ranger players on my team ; Alexis being one of them

I've been puzzled by Gustafsson's treatment in general. With Caps he was fantastic, amazing performance metrics, great point production, by far the best 5on5 D for Caps, pacing for a solid 55 point season. And then Leafs acquire him, and what do they do? Make him the 7th defenseman, play him a couple minute a game, play absolute plugs over him, etc. because "he can't play defense" even though metrics disagree with that. And then they dump him and sign Klingberg's corpse for 4mil. Because Klingberg sure can play defense.

Yeah, I don't even know.

I have noticed teams are playing more defensive minded in OT. Too many regroups. Having someone win the face-off in the defensive zone and then making the change which which takes time off the clock. Laviolette should have played Jones in OT. It's all skating. 3 on 3. There aren’t physical confrontations. Let Jones skate and move the puck. Laviolette had Trouba out there looking to protect the 3-3 tie.

Missed the game due to work commitments. Got home late knowing only we’d won the shoot-out.

Watched game.

This is all I remember seeing….

Gus at his cap hit is absolute robbery.

Different players but it's like a Stralman situation
The leafs let him go and got Klingberg lol

BTW, I have a man crush on Will Cuyle. Kid's a force out there. With better linemates he'd be producing better too. He gives it his all his game. I also think he'll be a phenomenal playoffs type player.
I don't think he needs much better for linemates to be honest, i think if he could get Trochek or Chytil instead of Bonino things are gonna take off for him. He's exactly what this organization needed in the middle 6, a guy that can play anywhere in the lineup

When Kakko was there how many times was he part of the 2 on 1? Mika and Kreids know when to anticipate those opportunities. The third guy is irrelevant.

It seemed like there were a few times this game where Kreider got hung up at the blueline because he was waiting for Wheeler to lumber through the neutral zone with the puck. They need a RW on that line that can skate with them. Kakko may not have been the guy either. I don't know that we have a good answer for that spot right now.

To me, the 3 on 3 novelty has worn off.
