It seemed like there were a few times this game where Kreider got hung up at the blueline because he was waiting for Wheeler to lumber through the neutral zone with the puck. They need a RW on that line that can skate with them. Kakko may not have been the guy either. I don't know that we have a good answer for that spot right now.
The correct answer is Cuylle.

Cuylle has a knack for just grabbing the puck and skating it north, even when there is traffic. That is something very few forwards on this team choose to do.

If you have Cuylle who can just skate it through the neutral zone on side without getting all cute like Kakko and Wheeler, then you can spring the opposing wing or center who can skate into the zone with speed.

Right now Kreider and Mika need to skate east-west waiting for Wheeler, that's a recipe for a disastrous injury if they have to take a forced pass.

Is there a RW there who is:

- Good off the rush
- Good at puck retrievals
- isn't completely inept along the walls
- Isn't going to nuke your line defensively

Thats what we need at minimum. I do think a lot of undue blame is being places on the RW's on that top line though (and TBH, I don't think Wheeler has really been that bad there.)

Offensively Kreider has come and gone (mostly gone) and Zibanejad has been gone for like 90% of his shifts.

I wish I was good with technology. At around 1:20 or so left in the 3rd period, Gustafsson made this just insane stop at the blue-line to keep the puck in and then made this insane elevated pass to Zibs.

It didn't lead in a goal, but it was just an utterly unreal sequence of events to see. Like, that was vintage Erik Karlsson level skill, there. What a f***ing sequence for him even if it didn't end in a goal.

Really like bringing him in. He's been a great find for us and I really hope we can re-sign him.

On another note, I would have titled this thread "Windbreaker."

Missed opportunity.

Gus is insanely talented and he's been noticably good in just about every game. The value for contract with him is off the charts

there was a play where it seemed like laine had him beat wide and was going to cut across the crease and somehow miller poke checked the puck off his stick.
Fantilli tried to blow past him too. He does a fantastic job of disguising his reach and baiting players into trying to blow past and then effortlessly stripping them of the puck.

Kreider has 10 goals and 14 points in 14 games and yes PP points do count just as much as ES. Best net front player in the game. This after scoring 88 goals the last 2 years including 6 against the Devils in the playoffs. The shit this guy gets from some of you is laughable.

Speaking strictly 5v5.

Kreider has been excellent on both ST units.

....

We're #2 not because of him but in spite of him.

Kreider, Panarin, and Trochek are why we're #2.
Mika has a long enough history with us that as long as the PP is working we can wait for his inevitable hot streak. The threat of him (and yes other teams ARE still worries about him) opens up space for the other guys. Now that Bread is actually shooting, it creates a lot of options, and success.

How are his defensive metrics 5v5?

It may not be though. He's young, plays LW, and is playing well. You want to have him play RW and put more pressure on the rookie by playing him on the 1st line? I don't think so. Keep him where he is right now. There is just no perfect fit for 1RW right now and I don't think Wheeler has been that bad. Maybe Vesey gets a look down the road.

They think they have the smartest and best people there because THEEEE OHIO STATE is in Columbus.
Ohio is the worst state in the USA because they are the only bad state that will swear to God that they are one of the best states. Like Indiana is bad but it knows its bad. Ohio is boring AF and the food is terrible. Columbus is just OSU students and adults who think that they go to OSU. It sucks.

Sure, but we also need more of this style player as well.

It has to be Raanta the last time I had so much faith in our backup goalie. I know we're playing good D in front of him but what a damn good move he was. Last year Halak was a complete scrub early in the season.
