Am I wrong--provided the team continues to play at it's a current level (and the goaltending situation is at least the same--with hopefully UPL stepping up)--to think that Quinn's performance (I talking Calder Trophy contender level) could be the x factor next year of putting the team over the top in the race for a playoff spot next year?

You never know how he will do in the grind of a long season in the top league (his production amid injury and illness setbacks this year is flat out incredible) but the thing that gives me the most optimism is that in his two games here he was not shy about firing the puck and I still don’t think a goalie had seen his shot with enough time to react yet. He’s got a special special special rare release. And I thought he was the best player on the ice one of the games he got before injury.

While I like BUF’s overall long term depth better than Ottawa, I think they’re poised to take a step before BUF. I think OTT could take that step next year, whereas I think BUF is 2 years away.

But really what is the biggest factor in terms of accelerating that timeline will be if there are any significant trades or UFA signings that we can’t see now when trying to project next year’s roster. They’re certainly not required, but if it’s just based on the development of players already on the team or rookies next year, I think they’ll need more time.

Sure, Quinn may have an immediate impact, but there are a lot of other players that are going to get SO much better, but not over the course of one year. Cozens and Krebs chief among them, and a guy like Peterka who won’t burn up the league in year 1.

The biggest move they could make this summer is getting a legit #1 G like a Husso or Kuemper, because even if UPL can eventually be a high end #1 (open question), it’s highly unlikely it’s as soon as next year. And I think the only way BUF could take a quantum leap and bypass the more realistic 2-3 timeline would be if they signed a goalie who’s playing at a Vezina level and can steal some games while they continue to grow.

Buffalo was 14 points behind Ottawa last year and passed them this year with the most games lost to injury and without their three best prospects playing more than a total of 6 or 7 games.

Quinn table setting the OT GWG tonight -

Wish they had his earlier shifts where he nearly won it - one in OT, one late in the game where he did his thing cutting into the middle lane and absolutely firing the puck on net but was just a smidge wide.

He's interesting in how he both handles the puck to manipulate checkers and how he will move the puck quickly, sometimes no more than just a touch, to get it to a better position quickly. Some guys do one or the other, but seeing someone do both and even on the same shift is deliciously smart play.

I loved that first play he made in overtime that he didn’t score. Not much was happening and Schuldt and Macinnis were keeping the puck. He finally got it back in his own end and basically said screw this I’ll do it myself, charged the net and nearly scored.

We don’t have a goalie this year. Still passed Ottawa

The point is OTT’s core players are more established/have already broken out in terms of production (even if they’ll continue to get even better), in addition to a bunch of young guys on the cusp.

With BUF, a lot of their core players either haven’t broken out yet (Cozens, Krebs, Mittelstadt if he ever does) or are still in the AHL (Quinn, JJP).

That’s just why I think OTT is 1-2 years ahead of BUF in terms of evolution, even though I like BUF’s group better long term.

I'm continually impressed by his drive to have the puck in key situations. If he doesn't have it, he's busting his ass to get it. If he does have it, he's trying to get it, himself or a teammate into high quality scoring position.

That seems to be a trait that Adams likes in forwards as that is something not only in Quinn's game, but also guys like JJP, Krebs, Tuch, and some others.

That was one of the things that always jumped out at me while watching the '67s. He just makes things happen, offensively / defensively he's trying to be a difference maker

If Sabres get decent goaltender that can at least sit at a 2.5 GAA across the season and Jack Quinn becomes the PPG star that Eichel was suppose to be, we are in the playoffs.

Lots of things have to go right but I think we are so close.

Im starting to think our 3rd line next year should be Asplund - Cozens - Quinn. Let them feast on weaker matchups and still have RA for defensive support.

Maybe JJ-Cozens/Krebs-Quinn could be a 3rd line comparable to Vanek-Roy-Afinogenov? They weren't great defensively at first glance, but they were such a mismatch for other 3rd lines they didn't need to be. Also allows them to keep Asplund-Mitts-VO together.

I thought the goalie had a legit complaint. It was a sick goal and the Amerks needed it... but that was worth arguing.
I'm not sure about the rule but the puck is moving forward all the time, his skates does move to the side however when he avoids decapitating the goalie.

It was super quick but it looks like the puck slides forward on the dekentonthe right and he just glides forward to finish. Worth reviewing for sure but clearer than the one on Andy
