Pretty accurate. The US Thanksgiving has been a pretty good benchmark of who will make the playoffs.

Which has nothing to do with the fact that the sample he was trying to use to measure backup goaltending was completely meaningless.

We often manage to get ourselves in terrible positions before re-signings.

Need to sign Zaitsev soon? Better put him on the PP to pump up his points before giving him $4.5.

Marner played with Bozak his first couple years? Well better put him with Tavares in his contract year to really jack up his worth.

The team is better defensively than ever before? Of course, because it's time to re-sign our goalie. Even if I don't think GAA is that vital its going to raise his value on the market.

so we should put our players in compromising positions to avoid higher salaries?

With most players I'd agree but with Campbell I don't get the sense he's going anywhere.
I agree though, lock it up and punt Mrazek.

agreed, Campbell is going to sign here because I’m not convinced he can be this good anywhere else. He is so comfortable and well liked here and clearly he feels settled. Plus he is a fan favourite.. I just think he knows how good he has it in Toronto and he won’t leave. Whether it’s a team friendly contract or one that gets him a significant raise. I think he’s the goalie of the future for us.

You'd have to think endorsements are going to start rolling in as well.
It's hard to recall a player that is so well liked. Is it possible that anyone out there exists that doesn't love this guy?

Many were saying similar things about Hyman. I'd say the same thing about Campbell as I did about Hyman - it's quite possible he takes a small discount to stay here but expecting he'll take a substantial discount just isn't realistic. This is even more true for Campbell because as far as I know, he's not wealthy without hockey like Hyman was and he's also played for a long time without making a lot. Hell he's not even from the area like Hyman was so not sure where all this optimism comes from. Bottom line to me is thinking he would pass up the one opportunity in his career to make bank seems completely unrealistic to me.

If he has a season where he plays say 55-60 games and gets nominated for the Vezina (and he's on track to do just that), what kind offers do you think he'll get in the UFA market?

Sign that man now, while we still have a little bit of leverage (injury risk is always there).

i never believed hyman was staying for a second. The moment they didn’t resign him the summer before I knew he was gone.

Only reason why I think this is different because it sounds like Campbell wants to play. I’m not saying money doesn’t matter to him. It probably does, but he grinded it out for years just to get to the NHL and not to be a back up but a quality starter. I think he wants to be in a situation where he is good. If he wants top dollar I’m not sure there’s a situation where he can go to a contending team and get top dollar. So that’s what he has to figure out. Does he stay in a system that benefits him and leaves some money on the table or does he go somewhere where he might get exposed as an average goaltender but makes a lot of money. It’s a tough call. It’ll be a different choice for each individual! I hope he stays though!

I don’t expect him to take a discount either to stay with us! I think I said whether he takes a team friendly deal or gets a significant raise you gotta sign him. Just make it happen

for sure! Only other guy I can think of is probably Darcy Tucker in recent memory. Maybe Lupul for a little bit. Lupul was loved here for a year or two haha.

Yeah I think Lupul may qualify.
I don't think Tucker was so much. I think he was more a guy you either really loved or didn't at all, like Domi.

Lupul was a great story when he came back from his first injury after the trade. Sad to see the leafs do him dirty. Only thing I didn’t like about Lou was he was not a compassionate person at time. Jared Cowen and Lupul situations still don’t sit right with me

I don't think it's a question of him wanting top dollar or not. It's more like if there's a team out there that offers him say 5 years at 6 million, then I wouldn't expect him to stay with us if all we're offering is 5 years at 5 million.

Playing with a contender is nice but let's be real here, money is a HUGE part of any contract negotiation. And that's especially true for a guy who has been playing for a long time, has never made big money and now has one chance to do just that.

100% agree, I do think ultimately he’ll stay bc I think the leafs will give him a competitive/market value contract. Why wouldn’t you if he’s been this good right? Unless you think Mrazek can be better

I pretty much want to keep him no matter what, that's why I want him signed before the price becomes a runaway train. It would be less than ideal if we had to trade Marner to find the cap space. ;)

LOLL leave my marner alone!! I just hope these guys make it to the finals together. Not just a round but really find their way this year.

Campbell played well last year.
Dubas should have signed him last summer.

Campbell is betting on himself and I think he’s propping up this team.

We have won so many 1 goal games, We could have 5 more loses with anyone else in net.

Dubas is going to pay for this. Either a team with big goalie needs will pay a lot for him or we will pay big time.

I’d rather lose a key player and keep Campbell than lose him.

Woll being great is more dream than reality.

Depending the contract and what Campbell would be willing to sign I don’t think it’s that simple. Campbell was still a bit of an unknown even after last season.

I don’t think he would have signed any long term contract under 4 million and if the leafs signed him to anything long at that price it would be so risky considering how tight we already were to the cap. This is a case of hindsight 20/20

Maybe he would have signed for 3 million for 4/5 years, we don't know what Campbell would have signed for in the summer or what he would sign for now. What we do know is that the price has gone up.

Hindsight - sure. Here's the thing though, signing him may have been risky but so was not signing him which is clear now if anyone didn't think so before. Every contract ever signed (or not signed) is a risk, that's just the nature of the business. I said it in the summer - Jack should be the #1 priority (yes, even ahead of Rielly). Dubas gambled that not signing him was best and so far that looks like a huge mistake.

The way I see it is:

Campbell played well last year.

Doubling down on him was realistically our only option for GREAT goaltending. He could have flopped this year, but didn’t.

I assumed management wanted him and that’s why we sat Andersen.

Other than finding “OK” goaltending like Mrazek, what was our non-Campbell plans ?

Any other non-Campbell plans would have resulted in only OK tending.

This team isn’t a defensive juggernaut. And won’t be surviving without top notch goaltending.

It really seems to me Dubas felt Campbell was a fluke.
