Happy, Jack? The Leafs’ Jack Campbell is No. 1 in Toronto, and No. 1 in the NHL | The Star
“He’s just so solid, he’s so dialed in right now and we just trust him completely,” defenceman Justin Holl said. “He’s been there for us every time we needed him.”
Good thing, too, because of Petr Mrázek’s continued groin issues.
Campbell is on pace to play in 68 games this season, an unsustainable number in the modern goaltending world of load management. It’s not unheard of. Frederik Andersen played 66 games for the Leafs in 2017-18. Felix Potvin holds the team record: 74 games, in 1996-97.
But the idea was for Campbell and Mrázek to share the net. The Leafs aren’t ready to give prospect Joseph Woll, or any other goalie, the starts Mrázek would have gotten, so they’re riding Campbell’s hot hand.
“We’re conscious of it,” Keefe said of Campbell’s workload. “But he’s been really good. Not just his play, I think that the way we’ve managed him in practice has helped that. Sometimes the team, in games, can help his workload.”
Keefe brought up Toronto’s 3-0 win over Nashville. It was Campbell’s third shutout, but it was also a light night in terms of shots faced.
“I think it was three shots in the first 17 minutes of the third,” Keefe said. Those kind of things really go a long way as well to help in that workload.
“So I think he’s managed it very well. I think he’s become very comfortable with his body. The medical team has got a really good handle on him. In terms of energy levels, I think he’s in a really good place.”
Campbell is in such a good place that he could be playing his way on to the U.S. Olympic team. Going into the season, the favourites for the three goalie jobs appeared to be Connor Hellebuyck, John Gibson and Thatcher Demko.
But, after Thursday’s win over the Rangers, Campbell is leading the NHL in wins (10), goals-against average (1.68) and save percentage (.944).
“There’s no time really to think about it anything other than right now, and that’s what I’m doing,” Campbell said of the Team USA talk. “Anytime you get to represent your country, it’s one of the greatest honours you can have."
“As a player, you’re competitive, you want to do the best you can for your team … and I’m focused on just being the best I can for the Toronto Maple Leafs.”
