Front office has always made it clear that they want Mrazek as their guy reading between the lines. Jack wasnt suppose to take the mantle like he did and they dont want to pay him in the summer. That covid break killed his rhythm and hes been splitting the crease since. Jack earned the right to get a few starts in a row but politics is in the way.

In what way? If anything they have let Jack run with it too far. Why would they keep putting him back in? I think they wanted a tandem because we left so many points on the table when Freddie was no good. They wanted to see Jack in an audition before committing big money. Which was smart.

fleury got kicked out of the net every chance he could last year. This year we went back to Jack after mrazeks best game of the year

Jack ...

I still love you.

Nevermind the what have you done for me lately HFBoards types.

Can't wait to see you shut out Tampa twice in the first round.
if he can get over his lingering covid health issues i believe he will

He clearly has the talent to be a no 1 legit starter
Who can take us far.

he is not the price. Vasi. Helle level starter (Igor probably too).

He is probably in the second tier. This tier is guys who can go far and go on a run but you don’t really know what to expect from year to year.

look at binnington. Grubauer. Varlamov. Dreiger.
Bob. Lehner. Heck even Gibson. There are massive year to year fluctuations with the majority of goalies.

holtby was a superstar and was a backup by 30.

goaltending outside of an elite 3-5 is a crapshoot. Luckily it has been proven that you don’t need the best goalie in the world to win the cup.

Jack Campbell dealing with 'mental block' in Toronto Maple Leafs' net - Sportsnet.ca

It’s highly unusual for the backup goaltender to take the podium on a game day.

It’s also highly unusual for a winning goaltender to get yanked mid-game due to poor performance while his team is leading.

But here we are.

Or, rather, here is Jack Campbell.

Fittingly the Toronto Maple Leafs No. 1 netminder tried to take his mind off hockey Sunday in Washington, D.C., by checking out the No. 1 film at the box office, Uncharted (his review: “Solid”).

Campbell himself is in uncharted territory as he rides the roller coaster that is a full 82 games in the white-hot Toronto market — without the seatbelt that is contract security.

And his play is sliding off the rails.

“It's a mental block kinda thing going on right now that he's got to work his way through, but he'll get there,” said coach Sheldon Keefe, ahead of Monday’s game against the Washington Capitals.

“We think there’s a good goalie there that will find a level of consistency, and that’s what we continue to work through here now.”

The 30-year-old’s freefall is precipitous, from deserved All-Star Game invitee and backbone of his club’s pre-Christmas success to a .887 save percentage and a loosened grip on the starter’s gig since Jan. 1.

“It’s simple. I'm the same goalie I was to start year as far as strategy and talent, things like that,” Campbell said. “Just relax and having some fun and not beat myself up too much. So, I'm still working. You know, it's a process. But I have great people in my life, great teammates, and I'll snap out of it."

“It’s just having fun and chilling out a little bit. That’s it.”

I wonder where our super star sports psychologist is on this one?

He fixed marner. What about jack?

They probably are working with him, but these things probably aren't solved overnight. Especially something like Jack's issue - which is learning to not let bad plays or games longer around him

The problem with Campbell is he's very mentally volatile. When the games start meaning more, he get's nervous. He has the temperament of a fan, yet he's playing the most important position.

This is proven by his performance in the playoffs. He can play well when we're up but as soon as the pressure goes up, he starts choking.

Leafs up 3-1 in the series. Price outplays Campbell every game since.

What did the Leafs outshout the Habs in OT? Like 16-3 in 2 games and lost both games?

Then Game 7, he allows a buttersoft goal from the point cause his heart is racing.

My old boss used to say, you dance with the person who brought you. Campbell was very good early in the season, and I think he's merited a shot at turning it around.

Isn’t that a nice way of describing sunken cost fallacy?

Absolutely not in the short term when we have a 3.3m backup with better numbers. Give him the break he needs and then slowly reacclimate him , see where we are come playoffs.

In a sense, yeah, but of course it isn't as simple as just walking away from Campbell. There's a cost associated with looking for a replacement at this point in the season.

Anyways, I agree. Let Campbell rest and refocus, and if goaltending is still an issue in the playoffs, then we'll have an off-season to address it.

agreed. Also why I still just don't see us moving for a goalie in this market. Carter Hutton isn't moving the needle. We're ride or die on these two for the season IMO.

Anywho, Stephen Valiquette was on the Fan Morning Show yesterday and he had some brutal reviews of Campbell and Mrazek, for goalie fans who might be interested.

Valiquette is also the guy who started up Clear Sight Analytics for goaltenders so it’s interesting to see how this shapes the Leafs goaltending strategy this year and beyond.

Basically says the Leafs just need predictable goaltending moving forward to have a chance to win. Not a franchise goalie.

The former goalie? What does he mean by predictable as well I hope it’s not 6’5 goalies who live on their knees.

Clock has struck midnight and Jack's lambo has turned into a great big pumpkin lol
His numbers suggest otherwise. Jacks getting paid this summer despite how hard the leads FO are trying artificially lower his value.

it’s time he gets a few starts in a row again to find a groove.

Well Jack get ready for Saturday cuz it’s your turn to lose the net just like mrazek did today

Yup exactly. why I’d be looking for the goalies with a career history of Low % of really bad starts and high % of quality starts.

being able to “live on your knees” is extremely important for a goalie in todays game. The problem with Jack is he is brutal on his knees. He can’t move laterally, he can’t get a good seal, he can’t enter/exit rvh cleanly. This isn’t the 90s dude.

i noticed this was something the backup to Reimer was great at - Ben Scrivens

I think it is time to put Brick Woll back in net and have him and Jack compete for the starting job. Mrazek has dropped the ball

Yeah Scrivens was a very technical and intelligent goalie. I think he was just limited in his physical gifts and he kind of got the most out of his body.
