We should likely be discussing who our goalie coach is. Campbell is capable, we gave seen that, but his discipline in the crease is awful. He is not ready for shots, he js up and down wrong, his side to side looks terrible...he needs coaching.

It is not a good thing that goaltending in toronto continues to be such a gong show. It's been pretty terrible for years. I don't know how much a goalie coach can do, but it's definitely a bad sign when goalies don't play up to par for us and then do much better on other teams.

I'll say one thing about our guy Jack, I DO have faith in him and i think he will get out of this slump.. He will come good.

The goalie coach is Steve Briere. I have my doubts given how Freddie fell off a cliff and now Jack is too.

That said an NHL goalie coach is not meant to be there to teach fundamentals like how to butterfly and crease movement while down. If Jack hasn’t figured those things out by the time he reaches the show, this is basically who he is.
One thing I've noticed is he's moved from his hybrid style to a more butterfly style.
That said he had gaps in his original style but now it seems all his holes done close fast enough and his movement seems slower.
Did the coaching try to move him to a more butterfly style? If so that's bad coaching imho

His recent numbers are not good.

The woes on this team have nothing to do with the D. The Leafs D has been good in fact.

It is 100% on the sub par goaltending. Mrazek has not been good, but Campbell has been just terrible. He can’t stop a beach ball at this point. If the Leafs go into the playoffs with him in goal, they will get swept.

Keefe has called our Campbell 2 games in a row now. Coaches never call out their goalie, that’s how bad it’s been.

A coach works on concentration, readiness, not dropping to soon, puck handling, communication with D....all these issues show up in Jack...that is coaching.

well we did hire his BFF and goalie whisper this year. Only to have him fired for liking tweets.

Yup, he has been embarrassingly bad. How the heck did he fall off planet earth that fast?

People who say the Leafs D sucks really need to watch other teams. 100% on goaltending.

We had a great conversation last year in the Steve Briere thread when discussing why this organization never seems to be able to develop goalies, and all our projects tend to wilt on the vine. There's also an issue with Toronto selecting a lot of great pure athletes who don't seem that good technique-wise. From what I gather there's a real lack of technical fundamental training under Briere and it's all confidence management.

Not sure what is wrong with Campbell exactly but a guy who has had confidence issues historically seems to be falling back into old patterns.

Leafs fan on this topic are amaizing.

Campbell played pretty wellm first 27 : "campbell will win vezina and toronto get a real shot for stanley cup"

Campbell struggle during 9 gamed space " campbell is over, toronto will loose again in first round because of their goaltender. They will never be able to beat bobrovsky who didnt play better hockey last 9 game .. we should trade campbell for an other goalie who struggle probably more than campbell this season in MAF"

9 game space? He has had a sub .900 sv% since Dec 1st

Could not agree more. The D has been solid. Unfortunately the team can not get a save from their goalie now. The goaltending is bush league.

Has it though?

Andersen
16-17 66GP .918
17-18. 66GP .918
18-19 60GP .917
19-20 52GP .909
20-21 24GP .895

Aside from an injury riddled (shortened) season, not much terrible there IMO.

For the price he's now going to cost, I think you keep sign Campbell again and see if you can't build on his confidence. The talent is obviously there.

We need another semi-reliable guy though

Might also be time to draft a goalie fairly high.

Marner's comment (from the Master's Twitter pull above) speaks volumes. There IS a confidence issue. And we can't exclude a potentially life-changing, life-fulfilling moment like confirming one's future as the starter of this Leafs' club as THE reason why his confidence has dipped. That contract, his future, has to be a distraction he's never faced before.

He was better in his first round performance than provided by Freddie.

I mentioned this in another thread: We need to find a goalie that has won a first round and can win a first round on his own. Koskinen, Talbot, etc, won't due. We have to determine how many of those goalies there are in the league. Then, determine which one is likely to be available. Then, we need to determine if that goalie is accessible within our means (ie not a first round pick, not a major prospect). And I think that leaves one candidate:

Marc Andre Fleury.

He would be the perfect mentor for Campbell. He's affable, he's accomplished and he'd be here for the run and that's it. We'd have to move Mrazek's contract which would benefit us for obvious reasons and in the scheme of things isn't a bad move for Chicago.

If we did move that 1st, perhaps Hagel becomes part of the equation, and a secondary prospect/player is moved.

But now's not the time to forget Campbell's larger body of consistent play simply because he's dipped drastically recently. I think Marner's comments are glaring in pointing out the obvious, something is affecting Jack's confidence, and it can't be his record prior to the slump.

It's got to be the contract and his future. I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt, a better mentor and the reassurance that all he's done is appreciated.

If we're going to judge his present, let's do it outside the most recent trend. Jack as a Maple Leaf is: 43-13-6. His GAA is probably around 2.40 and his Sv% around .918...

He's worth the gamble.
