I don't think Briere knows what he's going to do, other than answer phone calls.

Because the Flyers have announced they're rebuilding, but not "tanking," other GMs know he's under no pressure to make a deal - he doesn't need to create cap room, he's not trying to lose to get Bedard, which means there's no point asking for a Flyers player unless you're willing to pay full price.

So it's a waiting game, he's not going to trade anyone until he receives a suitable offer, he can wait until after the FA frenzy settles and teams that lose out come back to him, or he can pull the trigger tomorrow if someone offers a great deal.

This distinction between tanking and rebuilding that you've constructed is goofy. They are the same thing.

There is a way to know, this was the deal they did. If someone had made a better offer, he would have taken it.

But couldn't we use that logic for every trade? Better is in the eye of the beholder, and there are always questionable returns. I'm not saying there was anything questionable here.

Did they value not retaining on Provorov? Did they value Petersen (even in negative territory w/ a sweetener) as a Hart contingency more than they valued dead cap? Did they value Grans more than another pick/prospect? Did they value one pick more than another? Did they value Walker as an NHL RD and flippable asset? We'll never know.

Off the top of my head, Hextall trading Coburn for Gudas, 1st (Konecny), & 3rd in 2015 was better.

This trade is certainly better than any made by Fletcher though.
The total return off this deal is better, 1st, (2) 2nds Grans and a potentially flippable asset in Walker.
However different circumstances, expiring contract with a rising cap v a high two year salary with a flat cap.

Exactly.

Coburn trade was great
Timonens corpse for two 2nds
Rinaldo for a 3rd
Grossmann and Prongers contracts for positive value
Trading up to draft TK
Debatably Schenn for two 1sts

Those were all fantastic value.

This trade is fine value and refreshing after four years of disasters, but it’s not impressive on its own.

Dumping the Lecavalier contract may have been his best one.

I was never a TK believer but he proved me wrong this year. I love watching him play, but agreed. He’d get a large haul. I’d really hope they do it
TK has been my favourite Flyer for several years. As much as I’d love to believe he could stay around and be part of the rebirth of the team, it’s too far off. If they deal Hart, I can see him and Farabee demanding trades too. Why waste your prime on a tank?

Agree with your views on those Hextall trades, but i'd still call this trade impressive too.

22nd overall
2024 2nd
2024 or 2025 2nd
Grans
Walker (who they can flip at the deadline)
Petersen

For

Provorov
Connauton
Hodgson

I'm pretty damn happy with it considering how mediocre Provorov is on the ice and how shitty he is off it.

Yeah, don’t get me wrong, I’m not unhappy with this one at all. Briere did well and it’s infinitely better than anything Fletcher would have done.

But I guess it’s just a little less impressive to me in the big picture since I know hockey guys are obsessed with guys like Provorov, so I kinda expected a package like this.

Meanwhile I was shocked and overjoyed that we managed to get anything for Rinaldo or that version of elderly Timonen who had blood clots and didn’t play a single game all year.

Is it really that bad though? I don't expect us to spend to the cap in the next two years so if eating a contract improves the overall value of the trade it can be done.
Also. Rehabilitating a goalie to recover his ability is an ok value for your money proposition. Hell, every goalie on the league seems to be on a 2-3 year cycle, up and down, back and forth. If he plays in the NHL, and he's decent, or even better, Flyers could face retaining him at 50% or less for his final year at next trade deadline for real capital. There needs to be goalie demand...and Cal needs to get his job done...but it's not out of the question that this will happen in the next 2 years.

Not looking forward to what else might happen in the Flyer's net though. We all know Ersson impressed...does this mean Briere would actually move Hart too, and give Cal actual playing time in the NHL? That trade could net a lot of assets...but it would be bittersweet for sure. My guess is, no, moving Hart is a bit beyond what's necessary...but hey, who knows?

Don't forget about Hextall trading Tye McGinn for a 3rd rd pick

Traded after back to back 5 pt seasons to SJ
SJ waived him after 5pts in 33 games
AZ claimed him and he got 2 pts in 18 games
Tampa sign him ....played 2 games
Never played in NHL again

That's making something out of nothing. Too bad Sandstrom hasn't developed into something more.

That's why you play these guys when you're rebuilding. They gave Sandstrom a chance to build up some value, sometimes it doesn't work.
Everyone whined about playing MacEwen, yet he garnered a 5th rd pick, more than anyone has gotten for NAK.

I can see Walker, Seeler, Allison as potential TDL moves.

Lecavalier to LA was Lombardi doing Hextall a favor, & it was more about LA getting Luke Schenn.

We didn't play NAK on the 2nd line

Like how your boy Fletcher got bailed out by a few of his dad's friends repeatedly until the buyout rules changed and they all moved on and from then on, without those connections, he steadily sank as the league victimized him?
