Confirmed with Link: Ivan Provorov traded to CBJ (via LA) - 1st, 2 2nds, Petersen, Walker, Grans to Philly

I remember when Holmgren first came in on the job and did really well....basically the plan that the Briere Bunch are implementing now and with this first move. Then Holmgren started his firesale of assets and went off the youth and development plan with Pronger. Swung for the fences and got a triple. Then when Pronger got his eye stabbed by that cheapshot artist it was all downhill from there. Hopefully, this consensus committee stays on course but typically it does not unless Briere is an outlier.

I've always said this is the easy stage of GMing; different guy identifies and fixes obvious errors the prior guy was blind to, or too stubborn to admit he was wrong on.

The real test is when the new GM has to start recognizing and fixing his own errors. Looking at Deslauriers here.

They've been pretty adamant about remaining patient.
I think they've seen too many teams jump the gun and start making short-sighted moves.
Briere has referenced Colorado and NJ as his model.

He did well until he couldn’t spend money anymore. He was petrified operating in an open market to the point where he was trading high draft picks in a year we were the worst team in the league to do it.

Grans... had a down year but before that was on track to being a ~#4 NHL Dman, and is a righty with a very interesting skill-set.
If Grans can become a #4 NHL Dman, he'd be what Provorov became in Philly over the last three seasons. So Provy for Grans becomes a wash. The rest of the return is gravy. Now Grans might not become that #4 guy and Provy might blossom in CBJ but those are the odds that you take in making a deal. From what we've seen lately, it's a gamble worth taking.
As an aside, Provy in CBJ is going to be worth watching. He's never going to replace Werenski on the top pair or the #1 PP. These are things that Provorov coveted. Also if Provorov thought that Tortorella was a bastard, wait until Babcock chews on his ass and he will.

Super busy yesterday, didn't have time to post too much, and I've finally caught up on reading. I've give Danny a C+ for this deal. A 1st, 2-future seconds, and a prospect is the type of resources this team needs to be targeting. Getting a soon to be expiring contract, and actual player back in Sean Walker who can be moved at the TDL is also nice (not expecting much more than a future 3rd rounder but still). Eating Cal Peterson's contract @ 2years/5Mil is not a nothing burger. I would hoped for a 23-2nd rounder for that. However, this move required some creativity, talking with more than one team to get a deal done.

On the surface, the value was fair, but I would have liked to see Danny find a GM that would have paid out more for Provy.

This is a fair comment, but there clearly wasn't a better offer or a better pick.

It was important that Briere do a deal like this now, well before the draft. He traded a sacred cow with a big ego early, to tell the league he's open for business and not afraid to make a fair trade all around - and, most importantly, everybody is on the table. I'm sure his phone is ringing off the hook today.

Nice shift to be setting the market instead of waiting until the market dies.

Helge Grans looks fairly interesting, if he can play D at all he has a chance. He can skate, pass and shoot.

There are some interesting clips on YouTube.

All his goals 2021-22: Some pretty nice plays here and shots.

His end of season '23 interview: and '22:

Some draft clips from 2020:

I think there is a big need to see where he is at. He had a rough year where the last few months he was a healthy scratch, but people forget he was only 20 yrs old. He just turned 21 a few weeks ago.

His 19 yr old season was impressive. See if he can get back to it.

Given Provorov's play the last 3 seasons, and that his best year came with Niskanen holding his hand, you're weren't going to get a major haul for him.
Especially in a deep draft (I think most would consider #22 in this draft equivalent to #14 in 2021), so the Risto return was probably the best you could hope for, given Provorov's cap hit.
So they got a 2nd and Grans for taking Walker and Peterson and LA eating $2M and keeping one of their retention slots.
Cap room isn't as valuable as 2-3 years ago b/c teams have adjusted to the flat cap and a lot of the pre-COVID contracts have expired.

I think this will be the template for the next few deals, draft pick(s) and a NHL ready player who is blocked, to build up current depth while stockpiling picks.
This allows you to audition prospects in waves, instead of playing a bunch of 19-21 year olds together (the blind leading the blind).

Buying out Peterson is an interesting option. The cap hit is actually $166,667 more this year if you do, but then it virtually disappears next year ($166,667) and is $1,166,667 over each of the two out years. It would require a bit of flexible thinking, but you could potentially give yourself some room to take on a similar contract next draft.

A quick run through the trade comments on the Kings and CBJ sites here shows a fair amount of negativity towards the deal. LAK dismay comes around the fact that they wanted Gav signed for more than two seasons so the deal wasn't the cap space saver that they wanted. In CBJ, the Provorov Pride fiasco follows him. They aren't impressed with him being a "minutes muncher" over the fact that his performance was poor for the last three seasons.

Well, it's the biggest Flyer trade since Schenn, and before that Pronger (Coburn and Kimmo and G were all expiring contracts).

Really don't see that happening unless they end up keeping Hart. Even still, they could send Petersen to LHV if they want too. A buy-out after one season could be possible though.
