i think the difference came from body of work over the last few years.

gausman has improved really season over season the last 3-4 years

where ray has been the definition of jekyll and hyde
I think teams in general are a bit uneasy about having a 2 pitch starting pitcher. Ray's two pitches are electric but its an uncommon mix for a starting pitcher let alone an ace.

Steve Phillips said his sources says Ray overplayed his hand. Tried to get the Jays to pay more but it didn’t work out. Jays didn’t want to play the game and moved onto Gausman.

Ray had bad agents.

Ray's camp told the Jays he wasn’t signing before December 1st. And said he had much bigger offers on the table.

Jays said they can’t afford to wait because they could lose on both Gausman now and Ray after December 1st if Ray didn’t take their best offer now. Jays made the same offer to both and said whoever takes it first they sign. Ray thought they were bluffing and Gausman took it and Ray was left without a team.

Ray’s agent told him the Jays are out and now you only have the Seattle offer left in that range so take it now or else you don’t have any offers after December 1st.

Edwin situation to T. Ray's camp made it clear that Ray wanted to wait until after the December 1st deadline to get more money. Jays didn’t want to wait for their offer to be beat.

Phillips: "I think the notion of waiting it out and playing it out a little bit, until all the pitchers were off the board, and then we (Ray’s camp) can be the only game in town, i get why there is some level of that can be attractive. But with what everybody else is signing now, and a lot of the money that is available that is being spent, you could be available after the CBA is done, but what money is left, if everyone is spending it now? I think there was a pivot there for them (Ray's camp) after the Gausman deal, realized that they better get a deal now. And it was too late for them (to go back to Toronto)."

Also thinks the agent willfully miscommunicated the message from the Jays front office to Ray which is why we are where we are. The agent thought they could play the Jays for more and gambled and lost the players number 1 target (Toronto).

“The strategy and tactics on the Ray's camp side really cost them. He doesnt want to be in Seattle, there is no way he wants to be there. He rather be, i think he rather be in Toronto. ... They (Ray's camp) misplayed it".

Gausman is also a 2-pitch pitcher, but maybe they didn't want two of those types at once...

I think Jays might have preferred Gausman over Ray in general.

Sounds a lot like the EE/Morales situation.

Where did he say all this?

i still cant find any information if we get a allotted sum attached to those comp picks for signing draft picks. im guessing it should be in the second round range of funds?

guess we found out why he has a opt out after 2 years

Good timing to have a young player needing an extension at SS soon, when quite literally every single top SS is signing a new contract around the same time.
