Surprised the Jays didnt match that. It's a reasonable deal for a guy coming off a Cy Young.
I think the Jays weren’t comfortable having 2 pitchers on the wrong side of 30 making 100M over the next 5 years. Especially when Berrios/Gausman/Manoah is a pretty good SP core. Good deal for Seattle though, and they make more sense for a playoff push than Texas does.

Strange that we sign Gausman but not Ray. Unless Ray didnt want to return i cant see this making sense. I prefer Ray over Gausman even with the added draft pick that comes with losing Ray.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

(I also hate the Mariners so there’s that too)

Be an interesting debate for the next 5 years. Plus to see what becomes of the comp pick. That could he the huge difference maker here between ray and gausman

It would have been nice to bring back Ray but I was never fully sold on giving him a big contract.
I wonder if the Mariners will finally be able to be good.

damn that one stings. I really thought there was a good chance we’d sign both he and Gausman. Oh well, time to replace Matz and find a 3B

Well, there's not much left on the market, so now you likely need to spend prospect capital to fill another rotation spot. Hopefully they can get Rodon but I'm not banking on it.

People should have known Ray was gone the second it was reported we got Gausman. Gausman and Ray bring similar upside and similar risk with their deals. Makes sense the deals are comparable.

If i were shatkins id have done the same thing and sign gausman and get the pick for ray. Same player and get an added piece. Now to see if it works out

After the Gausman signing it is looking more and more likely that the Jays are going to try and pull off a blockbuster that will net us a 3B and another pitcher.

Cleveland - Ramirez + SP
Oakland - Chapman + SP
Cincy - Castillo or Gray + Mouse

With Gausman signing Pearson, Kirk, Guriel, Biggio, Jansen and prospects are primed to be dealt. You dont go make this type of signing without another domino to drop. A big one is coming.

Kirk + Groshans for Ramirez + vet #4/5 SP who has a year or two left on his deal.
Let Nate work out of bullpen and challenge for the #4/5 spot with Stripling and others.

Biggio and Espinal can platoon 2B.

Honestly this was expected. Ray and Gausman are nearly equivalent as pitchers but Ray would’ve cost a draft pick. Now they have two draft pick compensations with Ray and Semien leaving

The last big name FA the Jays let go of (EE) got them Nate Pearson in the draft

I like Gausman more than Ray solely because I do not have exstinental dread of Gausman going through the lineup a third time.
Im right there with you, I think hes a better pitcher who comes with more consistency and I trust the homework they have done to ensure his stuff is going to play up with any changes they may want to make.

The comp pick is nice, but I think the opt out is the biggest difference between Ray and Gausman; the risk is the same for both teams, but the upside is significantly higher for the Jays because the better Ray is the more likely they only get him for three years.
