Could I have stomached Semien at a frontloaded 175/7? Sure, it's daunting but the short term downfalls of a Semien sized hole in your lineup are rough.

As long as they get one of the big ticket 3Bs supposedly available (JRam, Chapman, Bryant) then I'll be perfectly fine with letting him walk but they gotta deliver at third.

This is very weird territory for them, be very curious to see how they react to that harsh December 1st deadline.

My guess is they get one of their pitching targets but we'll have to wait to see their solution for third base.
I think they are definitely focused on pitching right now.

they will probably sign either Ray or Gausman and then explore the trade market for guys like Jram, Marte, Chapman, etc. Jays don’t have a lot of starting depth in the high minors so it makes sense to lock in another starter.

Amazing what can happen when you have a good young core of players that everyone knows is going to be sustainable for the foreseeable future.

I'm okay with offering more years if it could knock down the aav. But I ain't paying 25x7

If we are looking at trades, I'd be okay with Ramirez and one of Castillo, (Marlin), (A) or package deal for Chapman plus a pitcher

Good on Semien for getting his payday. That being said, man that's an insane contract. That's about $25 million more than I expected. And $150 was the max I thought he'd get.

I'm assuming it's between Gausman and Ray for the Jays. I believe they want Gausman and if they don't get him then I can see them maybe bumping their offer to Ray to make sure they get him.

I also believe you see Ramirez finally come to the Jays. They've wanted him the last couple of years and with the Gurriel arbitration cleared up. They might want to move him now while his value is still high.

On top of this, I believe you see either the Jays make a trade with the Marlins for one of their starters, or they sign a Jon Gray which is near the top of my list.

Gausman doesn't preclude Ray imo

I can't see the Jays spending 50+ million a year on 2 pitchers that are most likely going to be getting 5+ years. With Berrios and Ray, you're looking at almost an 85 million dollar rotation

Yeah, unless one (or both, obviously) comes at a significant bargain, there's no way they do that. If they get one of them, the best bet for the other rotation spot is probably to go with one of the lower-end pitchers or a reclamation project (like Ray last year).

I guess it could also make sense if ownership has suddenly committed to spending to the luxury tax every year or something. But... you know...

What starting pitchers are in the 2nd tier of free agents? Would a guy like Alex Wood or Kikuchi be good value to sign before the contract renews?
