Not if the mandate shifts. It’s a really easy job compared to some markets, honestly. There isn’t immense pressure to win, you just need to give the core a chance. And you won’t be fired if the team tanks because the core performance drops off.

Sully has proven to sabotage moves the GM makes. If I'm a GM coming here and I tell FSG I'm firing Sully and I still get hired, than that changes

Good first step. Now fire and replace the coaching staff, and get to work overhauling the pro and amateur scouts.

I expected the FO to get nuked, and I'm glad. I will say I'm a bit surprised they even left the door open a tiny bit by saying Sullivan's fate is up to the next GM, though the whole "but he's the best coach in the world" thing doesn't inspire a ton of confidence.

"We think he's awesome! New GM can evaluate staff as they see fit. But MIke Sullivan is freakin great!"

Hahaha here was their response to asking if Sullivan would be coach next year:

"We think Mike is terrific. It will be up to the new hockey ops to make a decision, but we think Mike is terrific"

Aka they're not going to hire a GM that's going to fire Sullivan.

Yeah literally what they said. What a joke.

That was all executive-speak. I've heard it across multiple companies and from executives in many different types of business. He said similar things about Burke and Hextall, and he literally just fired them.

You know what he didn't do? He did not commit to keeping Sullivan around. He did say that would be up to the new hockey operations department.

The new GM could choose to retain Sullivan, but Beeston very specifically said that would be up to them to decide that.

Don't ever read too much into execs praising people in public. They never know whom they're going to need to work with again in the future, so they generally don't bad-mouth anyone that didn't already burn bridges themselves.

Obviously shows the disconnect coaching and GM had on the team. The window is getting smaller every year and Hextall while it looked like he tried to make runs at both Chyrchrun and JT Miller he didnt get the job done and we ended up with Granlund. Not too aspiring for an aging Geno, Letang, Crosby.

He didnt make any moves to put this team in position to run and thats on him.

The direction is obvious as it should be
I would have rather NOT gotten Granlund, and left it at Bonino/Kulikov. I think that would have gone over better, even though not desirable.

I would have rather risked on a 26 year old Brock Boeser if it came down to taking risks.
or...
Even a young sub 25 year needing a change of scenery.

*edit*
As for the coach stroking...
Ownership does not make the coaching decision, that's up to the GM. They will say everybody is great and let the GM decide otherwise.

It would be very surprising if a new GM fires Sullivan on day 1.

Since he was not fired today, it is fair to assume that he will AT LEAST get until Christmas. Heck, I'd bet that he'll get the whole season. Then, who knows.

Yes, but there was smoke about the decisons being made on grabbing guys at the TDL as well. Sounded like Sully was all in and Hextall, while throwing his hat it wasn't willing to go all in.

Granlund is kind of a slap in the face for what we needed, the idea is to win and while everyone has different expectations on what this team can or could do if you grab 1-2 big names you are that much closer to contending and I can guarantee you 1-2 impact players sit far better with Geno/Crosby/Letang and their chances of success.

Who cares about 1st rounders the next few years, ship it all and get it. Once the core is gone we likely aren't sniffing a Final for 10-15 years

I think our new GM let’s Sullivan go. No matter what is being said for business reasons, they can’t possibly take the third time is a charm route. He’s blown up two GM’s so far: if the new GM keeps him then they both deserve to go.

I agree, but that won't happen before xmas. If it had to happen before the season, it would have happened today.

Yohe just sounds bitter because Hextall never gave him any crumbs. He gets good soundbites from Sullivan so wont dare speak ill against him.

Imagining being such a loser that your kids live in a different country and your favorite thing is eating meat sandwiches and then writing an article questioning Ron Hextall as a man of conviction.

Just watch, the team will make the conference finals next year on the backs of the core/better goaltending and Sullivan will cement his job for the next decade.
