I personally think the supposed Rossi/Malkin connection is largely bunk.
Look they certainly have more access than like... you and me. But if these guys want to be taken seriously they need to actually... you know... deliver something that isn't clickbait garbage more than once a calendar year. Maybe actually get in on some breaking Penguins news faster than hours before national guys talk about it. That would be a good start.
It's well-documented that Rossi is working with Malkin. That's not bunk.
As for breaking news, every local reporter has that issue in sports. Practically every NFL signing/trade gets broken by the likes of Adam Schefter. Agents and those in the know use the national reporters as leverage in exchange for information.
I think the issue with Rossi/Yohe is that they have blended analysis, opinion and traditional reporting, largely because that's sort of what The Athletic wants. And they were over the top with some of their columns/opinions.
Their opinions and analysis can be hyperbolic, but when they take the time to be reporters and stick to facts/interviews, they have solid connections to reveal interesting information.
