If we somehow land Bedard and trade for PLD, can we declare that we’re at least a playoff team?

Not with those goalies. Will probably take another year. Pens did not make the playoffs the first year Crosby and Malkin were there. Caps did not make the playoffs the first two years Ovechkin was there. Oilers did not make the playoffs the first year MacJesus was there.

Depends on goaltending. Regardless if either happens, I can see HuGo going after Hart if he’s made available dangling Fla 1st

No. Montreal is very far from a playoff team and they're in an incredibly tough division/conference. They'd be in a position to compete for a spot though.

I think it's more about development than anything. So I agree acquiring the rest of the forward core doesn't really do anything until the team develops more. Plus they're still missing a top pairing D to play with Guhle and an elite no.1 G

So many holes. Still two top six star players minimum and our bottom 6 is shit as far as I'm concerned. Then the Dman and Goalie you mentioned. There is no way in hell the smurfette line up some are projecting can survive in the regular season let alone the playoffs. The talent trade off is no where near high enough.

Barring a third consecutive injuries-plague season; a catastrophic epidemic of sophomore slumps on D or severe regressions from Dach, Matheson and especially Montembault, the addition of both Dubois and Bedard on the Habs’ roster next year could indeed make them playoffs hopefuls next year.

I wouldn’t go so far as guaranteeing a spot however; too many unknowns would have to fall in the right places for it to occur so soon.

But if Dubois and Bedard do end up integrating the Habs this offseason, chances are a sustainable contender status could be reached by 2025 and maintained throughout the remaining 2020s’ - once and during the current emerging core hitting it’s prime.

i think so. With even average injury impact next year, the team as is likely lands in the 10-14 range. Add a top-line caliber NHLer and a prospect like Bedard who could/should be easily a quality top-6 contributor, and i think we're a playoff lock barring another year of injury craziness.

Yes but the two top 6 Fs will be solved soon with PLD and their presumptive top 5 pick. The elite goalie will probably happen in the 2024 offseason which is why I've argued that clearing cap before the 2024 offseason is a must, so they can throw money at someone like Sorokin, Helly, etc. That no.1 D, well I have no idea where that comes from. I do believe the Habs have enough talent in their pipeline to form a bottom 6 tho. Beck, Roy, Kidney, Farrell, Mesar, Heineman, Ylonen, Harvey Pinard, etc. Plus a veteran signing here or there. I'm not worried about that. Like I said, it's more about time than anything with this team. And getting PLD will really help with that. 1 less player to full develop

There's 0 chance Mitchkov is not taken in the first round. If anyone believes it will happen then you can disregard anything that person says about the NHL and hockey in general.
If Mailloux was chosen in the first round, there is no way Michkov doesn't get chosen in the first round

Bedard will still be a rookie in the league, I dont' think we make the playoff even with him and PLD, but let's just say it's going to be less boring to watch.
Year 1 would be a quick transition year as they gel. But I would fully expect the Habs to be a dangerous team Year 2. You have to be and take advantage of his ELC.

I can't see anyone trading for Hart until after the results of the 2018 Team Canada criminal investigation are known.

With Krecji Foligno and Bergeron close to retire. Wouldn't be surprised that Boston try to trade for Dubois
Agreed 100%.

All those teams didnt have a Suzuki/Caufield/PLD/Dach foresome ready to rock with the rookie star. Plus I wonder what Monty could have done to have some respect around here. He played like a top10 goalie this year behind one of the shittiest team ever. Starting by saying "not with those goalies" is not fair since no other would have done better in his situation.

Montembault was a feel good story in a bitter season, but playing like a top 10 goalie? Tone it down a bit. He’s an average stop gap. We have a nice trio of forwards but we have a long way to go to put it lightly. And PLD is not apart of our team until something is officially announced. We won’t know if he’s blowing smoke up our asses until it is.

If we even touch the bubble it's a huge accomplishment given we can't keep a healthy team on the ice. We are two years away from being what the Devils were last season. A team starting to learn how to win.

Fact is he won/kept us in countless games but I can't pin any loss on him. Think about the quality chances he had to face... Great attitude and very few bad goals all year. He's maturing very well.

I was responding to his answer to being playoff bound with Bedard and Dubois next year. Bedard changes everything...

I agree. My comment was more in response to your top 10 comment. Like I said he was a feel good story. He played extremely well given what he had to work with and where he was previous. But he’s nothing more than a stop gap. He lacks talent and it gets exposed the moment he’s not on his A game.
