My tinfoil hat theory:
PLD is using salary negotiations as an NTC

From LAK kings asks firm $9.5M x 5years
- with heavy frontloading (like $12M cash bonus the first three years) that they can't afford
- full NMC
- five years so that he can hit the UFA market again at age 29 under a higher cap

From Habs accepts $7.9M x 8years
- heavy frontloading as well, but Habs can afford it
- similar total dollar amount but over 8 years instead
- yes leaves money on the table but more than makes up the salary difference with sponsorships

Why are you assuming that LA can't afford bonuses?

Just my opinion here, but I’m of the Arpon school of thought : that ship sailed after Winterpeg said no. They are going with Suzuki-Dach-Mony-Devorjaque-Mister Concussion

Glad he is going to the Kings.
Not worth the capital to get him and if he REALLY wanted to play for the Habs he wouldn't be negotiating a long term deal.
Suzuki
Dach
Beck
Are solid building blocks and others will be available over the next year or so.

If they actually offered Vilardi we have no chance.

I think the contract is the biggest hurdle. Jets want an agreed deal before they let the Kings talk to Dubious and Brisson.

It’s tricky because imagine how Vilardi would feel if the contract negotiations with Dubois fell through? Kings could ruin the relationship with Vilardi

This is a very interesting situation. Entertaining

Habs re-engaging for Dubois means Hughes may have something other than coming back with players Winnipeg already passed on. That don't really make sense to re-engaged on that.

I remember last year, not sure if it was Hugues himself or someone close to the situation who mentioned that Chicago wanted a good 1st round pick for Dach and Hugues didn't had any so he went out and got what Chicago was looking for.

Hughes might have re-engaged cause he might have found the asset Winnipeg was looking for with another team looking for future for their NHLer (Like Philly or San Jose for example)

Ita possible he's found a potential 3 way that gets the Jets their immediate help, but the way I read it all today it sounds more like the Habs are still in the same spot, and just waiting to see what's going to happen with the LA deal.
