I'm perfectly happy to have both Dach and Dubois on our team, but I agree that $9M is a no-go. I don't care about his age, proximity to UFA, etc., Dubois would not get more than Caufield money from me.
I also think 9M is too much, within today's marketplace figures.
It's surely true that PLD's agent is looking for maximum dollars as this will be Dubois' last big pay cheque if he signs the maximum 8 years.
However, he could also sign strictly for 5 years, bringing him to year 30 in the first year of a next deal.
IMO, that works for HuGo looking to be relevant again in three years, through the 2025-2026 season, where PLD will be smack in the middle of his prime years as a 27-year old, Suzuki will be in his prime, as well as Suzuki at 26 years of age and where Caufield will be entering his prime as a 24-year-old turning 25 in January that year.
Matheson would remain a relevant veteran on the blue line at 31 years of age.
Guhke would be entrenched on the blue line in a top-4 role as a vibrant 23 year-old, still.
Xhekaj would have accumulated a few more talismans of death as a 24-year old.
Dach would also be just 24 and, yet, coming into his own as he would be entering his prime as well.
Anderson would only be 31.
Mailloux and Hutson would likely be in their sophomore seasons, the righty as a 22 year-old and the lefty as a 21-year old going on 22 mid-season.
Would Roy be part of the roster as a 22-year-old?
Smith, or whomever we pick?
