I’m still refreshing like an idiot every 11 seconds in case Sundin signed.
Sundin and Hossa were the worst ones.

Gainey had legitimate packages on the table in 2008, and acquiring either or both of those two might have meant a cup.

But Sundin decided to be a dick, and Hossa didn't come here because the Atlanta GM took a lesser offer from another team.

This top nine could have beaten the Flyers

Kostitsyn-Plekanec-Kovalev
Latendresse-Sundin-Hossa
Koivu-Higgins-Ryder

You are correct if the prospects in question are like those two. In this case we are talking about two rookies who have not disappointed and dealing Barron especially is dealing a position of weakness for a player that will not improve the team significantly especially if the cost is losing one of the few prospects on RD. Getting worse at that position will not help the team, only create a hole in a position that is harder to fill.
At the same age both Tinordi and Beaulieu had not disappointed and looked as good as Harris/Barron do today. That's the point, we don't know how our current young D will look in 5 years they could be busts just like Tinordi and Beaulieu ended up being.

There’s just as many success stories as there are failure’s like Tinordi or Beaulieu. Just look at Sergachev and McDonagh as mondern examples for our team. If we want to be contenders, we have to take a chance that prospects like Barron hit their ceiling. Can’t constantly dwell on past failures as a way to cope with trading them. Same goes for the people that look at failed rebuilds as opposed to the ones that succeeded.

But that is exactly the point , they match and keep him but can’t trade him until free agency . So he holds that power

You are correct , the last thing the jets want is an offer sheet , and especially a cheap offer is even worst . Lower return if you don’t match and nothing if you do at the deadline .
The negotiator in me think that fear is what will propulsé a reasonable trade this off-season .
habs should get pld to sign a 1 year deal where the compensation is a third round pick , then make it up to him next year, this way jets get almost nothing, plus right now the leverage in trade negotiations is heavily in habs favor because of this type of scenerio, the habs have an additional 10 million off of the books next season, so front loading a multi year deal is doable and lowers his cap hit moving forward.

also maybe pld threatens the jets and signs a 1 year deal with the pens who have salary cap room, do it dumbass dubas, this also puts the jets at a disadvantage in trade options right now, the threat of signing any offer sheet means that the jets should eat the loss and move on start the rebuild winnipeg nobody is paying a 1st rounder plus for a 1 year rental, especially knowing that PLD will sign in montreal next year.

A scenario less likely than Edmonton trading us McDavid for the 5th overall in order to clear cap space. Winnipeg will not get fleeced or sell low on PLD, no way no how.

How many 1st rounders are dealt at the deadline for rentals? Here you actually can have him for a full year, and the team can move him themselves at the deadline if they are no longer contenders. No proof of anything more than he will consider signing in Montreal.

.......making him extremely unlikely to accept a reasonabe long term deal at Suzuki money or an extension before he hits free agency at all.
My crystal ball and yours don't have the same image.

I do not think it is extremely unlkely Dubois could be landed for a reasnable deal. This is a guy who just took his qualifying offer last year without whining, grandstanding, negotiating, holding out or causing any real waves.

But predictions of realism aside, we both support the same kind of hypothetical deal?

I pass on Dubois unless he takes some type of discount to come here. Or a shorter contract.

Not willing to pay him more than 7.5M.
Why is that a discount?

He took a QO to take him one step closer to UFA. That’s been his end goal for awhile. And it’s not like his QO was some absurd underpay. The value was for him was not having to commit any term to Winnipeg and putting the Jets in the shitty situation their in now a year later.

Considering the lack of RD on the Habs, Barron for PLD could turn out as bad as the Drouin trade. You need to give young defensemen more time to develop before you make a decision on them, that is why I hesitate to deal guys like Harris and Barron at this stage of their careers.
It's Barron being offered instead of a 31-32 pick. Barron himself was a late first round pick. So is he worth more today than when he was drafted?

Barron is definitely not as promising as Sergachev and Dubois is nowhere near as weak a scorer as Drouin.

Yes, because RD don't grow on trees and he is further developed than a RD you can draft with the Florida pick, and more of a sure thing. Can't always keep moving young players out before you see what you have in them.

What season was it that Tinordi looked as good as Harris? I don't recall him ever playing well for Montreal.

Dubois is also less of a need than rebuilding the RD for the long run. Not the actual player, but the need for a scorer was higher when the Drouin trade was made.

He still took a paycut because he was worth at least a million more... undebatable. Who does that? I don't have any comparable example. There is no value accepting a QO, it's the worst he could get. Easily could have negotiate a better one year contract, no?

There is value in accepting a qualifying offer and I literally told you in the post you quoted.. he took a small hit on one years worth of salary to put himself in a position to walk to UFA earlier. It’s not that complex.

So you take the 2 best D stories of last 20 years and say there is as many failures... common now. How many Tinordi, Beaulieu, Juulsen, Mete, Poehling, Sherback and many more went overboard after the hype? Barron is a good prospect but far from untouchable, he could bust like many others. Those kind of prospects are assets and tradable for proven top 6 talent.

He couldn't negotiate a one year if that's what he wanted? Good one. He left money on the table and no one does that in the NHL world, especially for a team he doesn't want to play for.

Edit: How does that put him in a position to walk to UFA faster? This is non-sense, he's still becomes UFA summer 2024...

Dubois will probably ask for 8.5-9M on free agency.

I too would rather trade the 31-32 pick and not Barron

HuGo walks into the room and offers 7.875. "You can make as much as our Captain, welcome back to Montreal"

I don't see the need to offer him 9. If he wants Montreal, the offer doesn't eclipse 8.

Dubois is a lot more proven than Suzuki and Caufield when they signed their contract, and his contract will also buy more ufa years.

8.5 M x 7 years would be good for both sides.
