It's all over for Jack Eichel

I'm kind of glad the Sens are going to be too mediocre to be in the running for 1st/2nd this year. I'm not sure if I want to deal with the next 10 years of people telling me how overrated whichever one I drafted is and how much better the other guy is.

Confession: That's a lie and I wish we were either good enough to not need either or bad enough to get one of them. :cry:

I 100% agree. How embarrassing and rude to someone who is, for all intents and purpose, a kid in a junior tournament, and a guest in your "home". I admit to hoping that McDavid > Eichel in the draft and then throughout their NHL careers, but what has Eichel done at this stage of his career to deserve being booed at an international junior tournament...?! :help:

I feel bad for Eichel, if that's the case. I'd rather visitors to Canada during this tournament look at how well the Danes were treated throughout this tournament and during tonight's game to see how most Canadian hockey fans really are, instead of this embarrassing display. :shakehead

In turn, I agree with this 100%

Well stated. It doesn't reflect well on any of us to boo any of these kids, for any reason someone thinks they may have.

America's best player for the next ten years.

I don't think (as someone else stated) that they are 1A and 1B. I think they are more like 1 and 2. If Eichel achieves somewhere between Kessel and Malkin I think that would be the best he can hope for.

Wrong Austin Mathews will be coming out the year after. No one will no for sure until a few weeks before the draft and it leaks out through the media who the team with the #1 pick will choose.

Going to Edmonton or at least a team that has a good nucleus with the right GM will have a lot to say in both players NHL development. Saying that this tournament gave a glimpse into either players future is foolish and non-descript.

It's not like fans don't boo in the NCAA. They do. It goes with the territory of being a great player in another team's building. I'm sure Eichel has heard it before.

At this tournament, it's embarrassing.

To clarify, I think it is stupid in the NCAA as well. But, I would hope that is primarily a bunch of college kids booing another college kid. In relative obscurity.

This is primarily adults booing a child in front of a global audience.

Not really surprising considering where the game was played. These are the same fans that booed the American National anthem before, and continually boo most French Canadians because they don't play for their team

The similar thing happened in other cities too. Canadians like to say that Russia is still their biggest rival but it's pretty obvious that it's the US. I've never seen/heard the Russians get this treatment.

McDavid has been the Anointed One for a few years now. Regardless of who is/will be the better player, #1 for this draft has been set in stone for a while. I'm sure Eichel will be fine.

My Bias aside;
While the tournament wasn't the greatest showing for Eichel or Team USA for the matter, i dont think the race is quiet over...McDavid could return to Erie and go on a really cold streak and Eichel could start a 3PPG pace...

I was there for the Canada vs USA game on the 31st, Eichel was very much non-existent, where as McDavid had shown flashes of that special talent he has, and the reason he has been touted first overall since he was 14....And the game tonight vs Denmark confirmed he is only shaking off more rust.

With my Bias;

McDavid 1st Overall AINEC

Guys the caliber of McDavid don't go on cold streaks in juniors.

So Eichel looks better than McDavid for the first 3 games of the tournament and then has ONE bad game and suddenly it's no contest? Some of you people are so short sighted it's not even funny.

They're both just as close as they were before the tournament started.

Obviously will never have a career in the NHL. This was his great chance. No player taken below nr 1 has ever been close to being a top player in the NHL, WHC or Olympics.

It wasn't just 1 bad game... He didn't overly impress in the other games either and for a guy that has been playing right up to the tournament solid it wasn't a great showing...

Aside from the fact that Mcdavid had been scoring at a Wayne Gretzky OHL pace and higher than Crosby's pace ... I don't think they are 1a , 1b comparable.

Eichel = Getzlaf
Mcdavid = Crosby

I know in a draft situation while Getzlaf is a great player I'm taking Crosby 100/100 times.

And the McDavid's game won't translate banter.. that's like saying crosby was the next Daigle...

"...no one remembers number two."

Hmmm...I think lots of people remember, for example, the Taylor Hall, Tyler Seguin debate...

Bearing in mind, Oiler's woeful record, Seguin's emergence as a top notch #1c, and that, all other things being equal, centers are generally more valuable than wingers, would Edmonton ( had they a time machine ) draft differently? Better yet, would Dallas even entertain the idea of an even up swap?

***

But getting back to the original question. Yes, I do think, it's a very very safe bet ( barring injury, or something totally unforeseen ) that McDavid goes #1. I likewise think that McDavid's upside looks higher.

Having said that, it's an equally safe bet, that McDavid vs Eichel debates will continue for years...

Exactly. Thread title is too positive. It should be changed to reflect how truly desperate his situation is.

I remember when Malkin went 2nd overall, and thinking he could have been a pretty good hockey player, but there he was ...2nd. It looks now like Eichel has no hope barring some miraculous change, like say a small improvement in his game, in the next couple months.

lmao this thread title

Eichel should just retire to spare himself the shame of being the #2 pick

McDavid will most likely still go 1st overall, but Eichel could definitely end up having a better NHL career

Whichever one does not get drafted by the Oilers will most likely have the best career :sarcasm:

Poor Eichel. Not only is he a lock to go #2 after this tournament, but there's an 80% chance he'll be drafted by the Oilers. Talk about adding insult to injury.

You're either not old enough or didn't follow that hockey.

Canada and the US has a rivalry because they share a border and both have excellent hockey programs.

The old Canada/Russia rivalry was pure hate and good vs evil freedom vs communism. Those games were war.

Agreed. If true, unneccesary and embarrassing.
You need to reassess if you are embarrassed by the actions of others

As for McDavid/Eichel, McDavid was always going to go first. Fun to debate I guess but no team would ever pass on McDavid.

This was his chance to show everyone he is better then McDavid and get drafted first overall.

Both are going to go back to their leagues and dominate but McDavid is pretty much a lock for first pick now

Do you guys agree? Or do you think Eichel still has a shot to be the first pick.
I don't think he was ever seriously being considered first overall.

After his play I could see him drop further.
I'm sure he won't be I'm not sold on him as the next star in the NHL.

This tournament has little bearing on where he'll go in the draft. It's a small sample size with unfamiliar teammates. That being said, he'll still go #2, as he should.

Guys, you misunderstood the op, Eichel is doomed since being #2 overall basically guarantees he will end up with Carolina/Edmonton :sarcasm:

Woe is Jack Eichel. He's going to get picked second now. Like he always was... Not a knock on him, that's just how it was always going to be.
