It's all over for Jack Eichel

I think Eichel performed very well. The second best team in the tournament, so far at least, is now out (such is the nature of the tournament... one and done), but he was certainly a force on that team.

Eichel will be the better all around player in the NHL.

Mark my words.

Lower point total but better overall.

No.. those Crosby comparisons came before Kessel's draft year. Totally different.

Bingo. At this point of Kessel's draft year opinions of him were very much split, but the 'American Crosby' stuff was long in the rear-view mirror. Those comparisons came when Crosby was still in junior...so it'd be more akin to somebody calling Auston Matthews the next McDavid anyway.

I still maintain that Eichel will end up being more like a Malkin...the #2 that goes there because the guy above him had been hyped for years and deserved to be there, but who may actually be better in the long run. Regardless, whoever gets either player is going to be thrilled.

I agree with the majority of posters here. McDavid is the pick, has been for years. Eichel will be an AMAZING player in this league, however.

Eichel the next Malkin? I don't see it. He'll be a quality pro, maybe America's best player for the next ten years, but Malkin is pretty much a generational superstar and I don't see that in Eichel.

I see McDavid being a Hart candidate/winner for several years to come. I don't think (as someone else stated) that they are 1A and 1B. I think they are more like 1 and 2. If Eichel achieves somewhere between Kessel and Malkin I think that would be the best he can hope for. Probably a Hart candidate, likely not someone who is going to win it repeatedly.

I 100% agree. How embarrassing and rude to someone who is, for all intents and purpose, a kid in a junior tournament, and a guest in your "home". I admit to hoping that McDavid > Eichel in the draft and then throughout their NHL careers, but what has Eichel done at this stage of his career to deserve being booed at an international junior tournament...?! :help:

I feel bad for Eichel, if that's the case. I'd rather visitors to Canada during this tournament look at how well the Danes were treated throughout this tournament and during tonight's game to see how most Canadian hockey fans really are, instead of this embarrassing display. :shakehead

The Danes were treated well because they were a constant underdog. They really posed no threat, so it was okay to root for them, you knew they weren't going anywhere against the major competition.

It's a universal thing, not just Canada with hockey. People have no problem rooting for the "little guy" but the second they become a threat, look out because the visceral hate will be palpable.

I really like Eichel and his skillset is undeniable but all in all.. his tournament wasn't very good.

One thing must be stated...saying McDavid has not been very good in this tournament, or even stating that he has not been one of the best players...is so four or five days ago.

He is currently 2 points out of the scoring lead in the tourney and sitting at +6. He has also won two POTG awards out of five, I believe.

This is a pretty phenomenal outcome already for a kid in his draft year.

He's been better the longer the tournament has gone for sure. But he hasnt been one of the better players through the entire tournament as of now, especially since 6 out of his 7 points has come against the two worst teams in the tournament. Still, most important games left, I am sure he will change that especially since he has beginning to play better as he gets more comfortable playing since his injury. But saying he has been one of the better players in the tournament as of now is just not true.

I don't think this tourney matters one way or the other, although it probably doesn't help his cause.

I don't care what the scouts say publicly, McDavid is and has been the consensus number 1 pick all along and nothing short of a colossal failure in Erie for the rest of the season will change that. Even that likely wouldn't matter. McDavid has been tagged "franchise player" since he was 15. No team is going to pass that up and look idiotic when he becomes the next Crosby or Ovechkin, no matter how good Eichel gets.
Nailed it.

Neither of these guys lived up to the insane hype they've been getting.

Both will be about on par with former #1's like Tavares or Hall. Forget comparisons to Crosby, Modano, etc.
Except Crosby looked pretty much liked they did in this tournament.

(And the tournament ain't over yet.)

I have no clue. I haven't seen enough of these players to make that call and I doubt most of you have either.

I'd take McDavid but it's not like I have much to work with.

7 of his 8 points have been scored against Denmark & Germany.

This comparison needs some context.

If Crosby didn't play on arguably the best WJC team ever, he would have put up more points than he did.

Crosby's God status being questioned on the forums?
