All I ever heard the detractors say about Kreider was "great speed and shot, but no hockey sense". Now that he's showing that latter in spades, suddenly his finishing ability is in question. It's always something, I guess.

It's hilarious, people are always going to try and find something to discredit his serious skill and bad luck. He's got a wicked shot he rang the first shot off the post in Montreal from just inside the blue line and had 2 great shots last night that were just barely saved by Rask who had a great game. Holding once he starts potting them they come in bunches.

As soon as Giannone said he was working on his stickhandling between periods I had a feeling he wouldn't score. That just screams that he's over-thinking it.

All of the criticisms that have been thrown at him were valid when said. He has outgrown all of them except finisher, Hopefully, soon that one will be in the past.

He is playing great and barring injury will be a player in the NHL for a long time . The question is will he be an Erik Cole pernnial 25-30 goal guy or Jason Chimera another big body great skating guy with not much touch .
As for his shot he's really trying to load it up and bend his stick and blow it by goalies . What he should do is be trying to shoot like Jagr and Gaborik used to snap it quick hands high and out in front of them and surprise goalies and hit spots . CK isn't powering it through top NHL goalies . He needs to beat them other ways

well said. ive made that comparison before.

i see alot of erik cole in his game. at one time, erik was one of the fastest skaters in the league and he had a unique power forward/speed thing working until he got hurt.

kreider doesnt have the developed shot yet cause of his hands. thatll come with confidence though. hes got the strength to deliver a hard fast accurate bb. this part of his game needs work. he needs to slow his game down to start cashing in on his scoring chances.

if kreider can pattern his game after erik in his prime, we will have an allstar player.

Does he have a higher/lower upside than Cole or is Cole pretty much what you think he'll be if all goes well?

The thing I'm struck by the most is the transition in his game. What ever the factors that we will continue to speculate on were, it's clear Kreider made a decision to elevate the tempo of his game.

How many players have the ability to make the impact he has by simply making a decision to be more involved? Very few is the answer.

That's where you really begin to understand the gifts he has as a player, imo. Can't wait to see where this all takes him.

That was one of the best games I've seen Kreider play since he was at BC. Yes, he failed to capitalize on chances, but to generate that many opportunities against one of the biggest, stingiest defensive teams in the league was very impressive.

Once he loosens up, he'll start burying chances. It's only a matter of time.

Spot on.

Scorers need to shoot. That simple. He's over thinking this last bit, same way he was over thinking all the rest. He just needs to take a deep breath, exhale and just let those shots rip. He could easily total 4 or 5 a game. Pile em up. Law of averages will take care of the rest.

Yep. Keep ripping the puck. That's what true goal scorers do; Shoot, and keep shooting. Eventually they'll start going in.

The good thing even without scoring, he has been effective. Using speed and size to get to pucks and generate cycles and chances. Pressuring the D. It is what Torts was looking for him to do when he first came here. Finally clicking in. His size makes him a more effective Hagelin when not scoring goals. At minimum, that is what we should expect from him game in and game out.

Agreed.

Though some of them were overblown. Especially the one about hockey sense.

Hockey sense is one of those things that, despite being an intangible, people try to equate with some sort of statistic. I saw a lot of "low assists = low hockey sense" sort of posts early on.

yes, hes got erik cole potential and that would be awesome. cole in his day was a ferocious player.

side note, hes from oswego, ny- where i went to college and a local hometown hero.

ck's wheels are scary good. his first few steps i would dare say are as good as anyone in the league. he goes from zero to top speed in so little time and space its filthy. until you see him in person at ice level, you really cant appreciate his blinding speed from a standstill. he has jet feet.

having said that, it may sound crazy but hell be the most effective when NOT at top speed and sometimes standing still. i still say he will be the most dangerous scoring goals within 15 ft of the goal. hes so big and leverages so well, he is impossible to stop when hes protecting the puck. if he can develop that "cut back, cross ice snapper against the grain shot" when hes got the puck at speed, and his down low power scoring move, ala, go to the front of the net with the puck every time hes got control, he will become a 30 goal guy easy.

and add to that having him stand near the goal on the pp, hes got 30+ in him. easy.

maybe not hockey sense per say, but hockey IQ is more than just sense. its experience plus confidence that comes from playing.

keep in mind, he played low level high school hockey before phillips and not a ton of games. he played at bc but initially not alot. he really just needs to play and develop that IQ.

ive said all along, he would be a different, i.e. more offensively developed player had he gone to the O rather than ncaa.

Except "not being a finisher" was never a criticism. That one is brand spanking new based on a very small sample size. Anyone who paid even the slightest bit of attention to him before this year should realize that he's a goal scorer.

I love this post. I would eat it if I had a spoon.

the way he flys down the wing has always reminded me of erik cole however cole was never the wrecking ball of a freak kreider is.

cole had a better touch i think kreider has a much harder shot. he just needs to learn to place it better but his release is elite. no question. he's missed his spots here and i think that he's just putting a little to much pressure on himself right now. the goals will come no doubt in my mind.

i think he's a 20 goal guy though not a 30 plus guy. but i think because of the way he hunts down pucks and creates turnovers that his assist numbers could be VERY high especially for a guy that isn't really considered a play maker. i personally think he's a 60 pt player while running a muck out there. love it

I think 30/30 is reasonable and I have thought that for a long time. Pacioretty/Cole-like player. Unique combination of size, skill and speed.

Imagine if he had Gabby's shot...

The guy is creating as many chances as anyone I've seen on the Rangers in a long time, maybe more than Nash. Also incredibly frustrating to get my hopes up and not score on all those great chances.

He will get there. NHL goalies are good, no one scores on even the majority of their chances.

Lots of guys are finishers at lower levels that never become finishers in the NHL. He might become one, but he isn't one at this moment.

People tend to smash the concepts of "hockey sense/IQ", "on ice vision", playmaking ability" "defensive awareness" etc. into one big ball.

Its not like hes even a pivot or on D. If there is a position that can get away with a thimble of hockey sense its a power winger.

You get way too excited/frustrated ay too easily. I think you are a very knowledgable fan but sometimes you overreact to things that arent worth overreacting to. Look kreider is probably the most frustrated at this point. the kid has been playing great hockey since his call up, he is racking up points even wthout scoring goals which is impressive. the goals will come. Gotta give credit to goalie liek Rask and Price who are top goalies
