Kids top 14 in the league for hits,
The B.Schenn deal they get Domi who is very similar and 4years younger, Dewar is a young solid shutdown center at only 25years old & Jarnkrok they could flip for picks or prospects once he's healthy, or they keep him....regardless we add a pick and or prospect if thats not enough.
The Market for B.Schenn wont be that high atm, very few teams will be calling on him if any at all...and every team except maybe one will be asking for that 50% retention

There are alot of teams looking for centers and defense

Domi we would probably have to add a prospect to get rid of his contract , another 3 tes

B. Schenn with 50% retention, there will definitely be a market for him.

Bobby Mac even chimed in last night and said if the Leafs aren’t going to go out and take risks this TDL when will they?? Great goalie tandem, D is pretty solid. We got the coach, he basically said don’t go out and make a stupid trade for a rental but you gotta be willing to pay a price to go for it

No, no it very VERY Isn't
I’m not a Dahlin fan so I’m biased

IMO, the Leafs need a RHD, and one that can handle the puck would be preferable. A partner for Rielly, who could push all of the D down a little would be best.

To me, if we are going to go big, make it a Parayko, a Gudas, or someone who can play at that level. Parayko would cost a ton, but he ticks all three boxes. Gudas two of the three. Oleksiak is none of those things.
Watching Timmons kill a penalty last night showed me we are a RHD PK2 short as a major flaw.
Hakanpaa could be this.
So too could Oleksiak.

Dahlin is one of the best defenceman in the league lol, Reilly isn't nor has ever been in the same stratosphere

Do I think Rielly is as good as Dahlin... no.... but...

Dahlin -> 3x All Star, highest Norris voting is 8th. Highest points - 73
Rielly -> 3 x All Star, highest Norris voting is 5th. Highest points - 72

Of course, Dahlin is only 24, and likely to eclipse Rielly's totals there, but I don't think the gulf is as wide as some are portraying, at their peaks.

Who is Timmons?

Hakanpaa probably doesn't do anything again. Oleksiak... a LHD, who hasn't played RD at all for a while, is the solution? Nah... and again, IMO, our main focus should be someone who can move, and shoot the puck. BTW, both of the names I listed previously, do PK quite well.

Hopefully the team has some information on Hakkanpa and they don't need to waste more picks brining in 6th/7th d-man & on 4th line wingers.

I thought they did a good job in the off season signing depth people so they didn't have to keep wasting picks on depth people and could use the lower round picks as added currency for difference makers this year.

Even if Hakanpaa could play again,he is your 3RHD.

You still need a 2RHD and I think Connor Murphy is exactly what we need.

As much as I love the idea of Parayko, the cost and likelihood for Murphy is much higher.

McCabe-Tanev
Rielly-Murphy
OEL-Hakanpaa

This is good enough, but honestly think Hakanpaa is done and we are looking at Timmins and Myers platooning 3RHD.

Adding 2RHD is urgent. OEL cannot play RHD in the playoffs. Why this team continues to fail to address this in a permanent and meaningful way is beyond description but it continues to bite them in the ass.

Honestly would love to add Parayko and Murphy but we don’t have the assets and we also need a 3C.

Watched last night’s game and still on board on a Donato-Murphy package as soon as possible.

Annnnd to be fair, Reilly scored 68 in a much lower scoring era.

Well no, Rielly did it in 21-22 and Dahlin did it in 22-23.

Plus Rielly finished tied for 6th in defensive scoring that season and Dahlin finished tied for 5th.

Edit: Nevermind, im dumb. I was going off the information in the post that said his highest scoring season was 68 points, but he scored 72 in 2018-2019 and finished 3rd in the league for defensive scoring.

Anything leafs related from the 32 thoughts Pod this morning?

Nothing directly about the Leafs.

--------------------

Teams could be looking into acquiring BOTH of the Schenn brothers (20:36)...

Elliotte suggests two teams looking at it. High price on Brayden. He doesn't mention any teams by name.

--------------------

Seth Jones - prefers a contender, but those who can take his contract aren't contenders. This is Jones driven, not Blackhawks, who would be ok keeping him. Mentions Columbus as a potential, if Jones views as a contender. Talks about Dallas, but it would be very difficult for them to do. Dallas would either require retention, or to send a contract back. Elliotte wonders if Florida would do it, if Tkachuk is out long enough, basically the rest of the regular season.

[My edit - Maybe it's just me, but I thought he was very weak defensively against us.]

-------------------

Pittsburgh - just a theory, nothing behind it... thinks Karlsson would work well in Dallas. Karlsson played well at 4 Nations, he's been playing well.... Dallas.. can they score enough, good at defending.. but can they score enough? Cap concerns...

--------------------

They also talk about the Boston Bruins finally waving the white flag on the season heading into the deadline (39:30). Sweeney talked about always being aggressive buyers at the deadline, won't happen this year. Trent Frederic availability talk... Retool talk... not talking bare cupboards sell everything, looking at long-term pieces.

----------------

Maccelli has been a healthy scratch in Utah, someone to watch, might be available. Utah is too small, and looking to get bigger, might move Maccelli to target size.

-----------------

2025 NHL Draft will be in LA... it will be a remote draft. Bettman will be announcing the picks.

-------------------

They cryptically talk about Gavin McKenna, and wonder where he'll play next year... he's not draft eligible and they mention they think the NHL will flex it's muscles here.... nothing more said.. interesting.

What do they mean by 'remote draft'? Teams/prospects won't attend?

I agree, in a perfect world and where they had multiple assets to spend & cap room, they would go out and get a top 9 forward and a top 4 dman at the deadline, but in todays NHL with the cap, it's very rare to assemble a "perfect roster".

You kind of have to pick and identify your biggest weakness and solely address that, which I think everyone would agree it's a top 9F.

Don't get me wrong, D-core does need a solid addition, but as history has shown the past 5-6 years, keeping the puck out of the net come playoffs time has never been the sole biggest reason for losing.
