Good question.

Human interaction I guess. Some guys react well to brash task masters, some guys don't.

Personally, I wouldnt have much patience for a player that seemed incapable of something so simple throughout a strike shortened season.

Or... It was never a matter of motivation and always a matter of experience.

Exactly. We've all spent months arguing over how the coaches were treating Kreider and why he couldn't put it together, but in reality it was a combination of many different things.

There's never going to be a winner in this "how Torts handled Kreider" argument.

Please.

I'm the clear winner here.

If I were a betting man, I'd guess it isn't experience either, and that Kreider's career will be characterized by ups and downs.

Maybe I'm gullible for believing this, but I think Kreider's game has permanently changed. Some of his quotes make me more likely to think this isn't just a "phase".

He now gives less respect to NHL players and after hitting several of them like a bus, I think he gives them even less respect now.

This. It seems like some people still hold last year against him despite being one of our top players this year. last year it was a strike shortened season and he was/is a young player. I understand after the 2012 playoffs people wanted him to be a star right away but it rarely works out that way. It takes time. Now we are seeing what kreider can be. I feel he will get even better with more experience

To me part of it was due to the lockout. The no training camp the condensed schedule and Torts doesn't strike me as a patient person. He didn't have the time or the energy to get Kreider up to speed the way he wanted him to be as a player and he had enough vets so he didn't have to. Now whether he deserved to be fired or not is another question and his handling of Kreider last year whether it did or not should IMO have little bearing on his being fired. I still don't know if AV makes us a better team than Torts. Sather has 9 lives. As 31 states in the post below Kreider looked like trash in the preseason….

It wasn't immediate with AV either. Kreider looked like trash through the preseason.

Richards also looked like trash in the preseason. He looked like the Richards of last season. The team and 6 exhibition road games and 9 regular season road games to start--with a completely new coaching staff--that was just ****ed up.

At the end of the day the best news is that he has now shown he CAN string together shifts, games, at this level of effectiveness at the NHL level. No doubt there will be ups and downs. But there definitely were legitimate questions of his ability to play at the level he has lately last season through this preseason; to what extent we can agree to disagree.

He has shown he CAN do it. Now he has to continue to show that and show it with consistency game to game and season to season.

This is all following exactly how he developed at BC. Tentative, unsure, then just an absolute man among boys.

His playoff stat line I think clouded some peoples opinions.

I think Kreider has been fantastic in the last two games I've seen him.

Not only is he taking advantage of situations that suits him; races for the puck; physical battle; opertunities to rip his wristers. Had he only done those things, I still would be a bit sceptical. Thats exactly what he done in the PO's. Zucc and Step has done a fantastic job to set him up and play to his strength (just as he has helped them to play to their strengths). But you can't live on others to that extent.

But he has also found ways to get involved. There was one situation against LAK that stood out and was typical to this. Zucc entered the zone along the right boards, cut to central ice, and then hit a drop pass to Kreider who came streaking down the right boards with full speed. This is a type of play I very rarely saw from him in the WJC's, in the mens WCH's, in college or the AHL or all of last season in the NHL.

The new open way, a little bit more creative way, we play in the NHL, and the structure and smarts of Zucc and Stepan, seems to have open the eyes of Kreider a little. And you can see it in his confidence.

I think we've seen glimpses in the past but it's never been consistently except for maybe his first WJC in which the Americans brought back the gold. He was very good in that tournament. He worked with his line mates well. He hasn't always done that. Zucc and Stepan and him have shown chemistry together. They compliment each other well though--so far though they've produced points--they've have teams on their heels a lot but they haven't produced all that many goals. Some of that is luck--pucks off the post/crossbar--some of that is the inclination to not shoot and make one too many passes.

I love Kreider's physicality and agree with you 100%. I can't wrap my head around the fact that he could possibly be a disappointment this year to some people. I understand his goal scoring hasn't been there but his gameplay has definitely shown major improvement. We finally get to see the Kreider we saw in 2012 at least 4 or 5 times in a game.

I agree. He has been a bit snakebitten whenit comes to goals but by the end of the year he can still have 20 when they start falling in. He has been one of teh top forwards in terms of physicality and creating chances

OK, elephant in the room: why can't this kid finish?
He can finsish. He is having some bad luck but the kid still plays great and still racks up points. I mean i know fans just care about goals but the kid is still a rookie. The goals will come

I was frustrated as well tonight, but I think this is being way overblown.

1) He got it between the arm and the body on the penalty shot, but it got just enough of Rask's body/jersey as it was coming out the other side that it went wide.

2) He beat him stick side on the breakaway, but it the shaft of Rask's stick.

3) He nearly banked it in off of Rask after he played it off the end boards but hit the very top of Rask's pads.

That's at least three plays where he was millimeters away. I think there may have been one or two more.

Sure, I'd like it if he had a little more dangle and if he was just a bit quicker on rebounds at his feet when he's standing in front of the net (and that latter in particular may improve with experience), but he's a world class shooter who's been off just that fraction of an inch. We've seen it countless times before to innumerable scorers. I'm sure it's a bit in his head as well. Once he gets one to go, I have a feeling we'll see them come in bunches.

Poor Kreider, I almost feel sorry for him. He tried a dozen times tonight, but he just can't find that hole.

This. I would understand the backlahs if he was invisible and wasnt racking up points. But the fact is despite not scoring goals evert game he is consistently the moats active forward since his recall and still gets points. Some fans equate goals with quality of play which is insane. Sometimes the best players on the ice dont score

Oh jeez everyone stop over analyzing. The kid is playing great hockey, he is absolutely dominant in the offensive zone. He will get his goals...just be patient.

Blame the coach for Kreider not scoring. Thats what people did here with Torts right? Blamed Kreiders horrible play at the time on Torts? Lol
