You are both actually making my point. Wally hasn’t earned increased ice time with his play and it took until year 3 for Dobson to get meaningful playing time. So why would either of you think Trotz would give an undrafted NCAA free agent immediate ice time? Hasn’t history shown young players need to earn ice time under Trotz?

If a kid with zero track record in the NHL (or even at the pro level, for that matter) feels he deserves NHL ice time without having to earn it with his actual play, then I have no problem with him not being on the team. I don't think that level of entitlement is good for a team, nor do I think it makes for good players. Young players especially should understand that they have to earn their icetime by playing well enough to deserve it.

But that doesn't mean they can't get immediate icetime if they play well enough to warrant it. Dobson didn't get more icetime as a 19 year old because he wasn't ready for more icetime based on his play. Wahlstrom still isn't at 22 because his play doesn't warrant it. If Meyers, or any other undrafted NCAA prospect truly believes they can play well enough to deserve the ice time they want, they shouldn't have a reason to believe they won't get it as long as they follow through on that.

BTW, leading your team in icetime at age 22 is a very fast development for a defenseman. Trying to use it as an example of a coach forcing a slower development on a player or holding them back somehow seems rather odd. Trying to compare the situation of an 18 year old to a 23 year old is also very strange.

He’s been here for a few days. Wonder if the plan is BPORT or isles?
Probably the last 2 Bport games and if they make the playoffs he'll stay there. Who knows what happens if we're both eliminated, would they give him a look in one of the last 4 NHL games? coming out here and only getting 2 AHL games would suck. Or maybe Lou does the Lou thing and just wants him to be around and get acclimated to life over here before next season.

Not sure how Bellows looked the other day, but with Wahlstrom failing to stick in Trotz’s lineup I wouldn’t be surprised to see Raty get a few games towards the end of the year.

Same with Salo/Wotherspoon/etc. I’m not really sure why they keep trucking Greene out there night in and night out.

I’d be surprised if Bellows or Wally affect what happens with Raty. He’s a center and projects as a center. Can’t see them playing him on wing to start.

Only problem is no center spot is opening up for the foreseeable future, if he makes the roster in the next 2 years it will likely be as a winger for now

IDK. A lot of Cs start their careers on the wing because it's easier to play. Sometimes they switch back, sometimes they don't. It's like midfielders in soccer - the best players tend to play C at lower levels but they can't all play C in the pros.

I don’t think Raty is pushing Barzal/Cizikas/Nelson/Pageau to wing so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him start off on the wing (at the NHL level at least).

Sure, in BPT he should be a center but unless someone goes down who does Raty bump off center on the big club?

I am going to write this and you all can disagree if you would like. But I see Hutton as another Mayfield. Been watching him in Bport and now on the Island. Takes the body in the d zone, moves the puck and is a decent enough skater(and has some size). I think he stick on the 3rd pair next year and will be solid.

So they are trading Mayfield for a 26 year old with <20 games of NHL experience?

No chance, if anything Hutton has proved he’s can be the depth behind Dobson/Mayfield/Pulock.

Maybe not a Mayfield because I don't see that kind of physicality in him. More like an Andy Greene. Smart, knows where the puck is going and he gets there. Skates well enough to track and cover most of his opponents.

Hutton will provide sound defense at a low price next season.

Who wrote anything about trading Mayfield? I think one of Greene or Chara are not back next year and Hutton will take their place at an inexpensive price. I only compared his style of play to Mayfield.

Trotz values LH-RH pairings and Hutton is right handed. Can’t see them trotting (trozting?) out a RH-RH pairing unless they are left without a choice (no pun intended).

I agree about the stylistic piece, Hutton doesn’t seem to rely on playing the body as much as Mayfield even if their size is comparable. Hutton seems more “cerebral” for whatever that is worth.

Also I think Greene is done, once they are officially eliminated I see no reason to play him anymore. I mean, I haven’t seen the reason to play him for quite a bit but Lou/Trotz have too much respect for guys like him to a fault.

I want to see Wotherspoon especially since they spoke highly of him earlier on.

Chara will control his own destiny, this kind of felt like a one-last-rodeo type of year for him coming back to NYI so I can definitely see him hanging them up, but I also wouldn’t be shocked to see him not retire. If it was me, I’d see if he would want to stick around the organziation in more of a developmental role but again Lou/Trotz loves their high character veterans.

I hate the term cerebral. That gives me Josh Bailey flashbacks. To me it’s a euphemism for “he doesn’t do anything particularly well” :naughty:

Seriously though, I just think Grant Hutton is a solid defender. Nothing flashy.

That’s why I put the word in quotes, it’s very vague.

I agree, he’s not flashy though but that’s not necessarily bad for a depth guy.

Sometimes it’s a good thing when a defenseman doesn’t stand out on the ice.

I personally don’t see it with Parker Wotherspoon. I don’t think he handles the puck particularly well. Seen too many ill-advised passes result in giveaways over the years. @DerekKingSnipes is a bigger fan of his. Maybe he sees things in him that I don’t.
