You are both actually making my point. Wally hasn’t earned increased ice time with his play and it took until year 3 for Dobson to get meaningful playing time. So why would either of you think Trotz would give an undrafted NCAA free agent immediate ice time? Hasn’t history shown young players need to earn ice time under Trotz?
If a kid with zero track record in the NHL (or even at the pro level, for that matter) feels he deserves NHL ice time without having to earn it with his actual play, then I have no problem with him not being on the team. I don't think that level of entitlement is good for a team, nor do I think it makes for good players. Young players especially should understand that they have to earn their icetime by playing well enough to deserve it.
But that doesn't mean they can't get immediate icetime if they play well enough to warrant it. Dobson didn't get more icetime as a 19 year old because he wasn't ready for more icetime based on his play. Wahlstrom still isn't at 22 because his play doesn't warrant it. If Meyers, or any other undrafted NCAA prospect truly believes they can play well enough to deserve the ice time they want, they shouldn't have a reason to believe they won't get it as long as they follow through on that.
BTW, leading your team in icetime at age 22 is a very fast development for a defenseman. Trying to use it as an example of a coach forcing a slower development on a player or holding them back somehow seems rather odd. Trying to compare the situation of an 18 year old to a 23 year old is also very strange.
