If Lou is involved you won’t find out until training camp rosters are announced
Exactly, if there's no announcement by the end of the weekend our chances are much better. If there's no announcement by August, we can pencil him onto our roster.

I think he did it in his draft year. So he was 18.
keep in mind Hubderdeau did this in 67 games out pacing his teammates by 10 points. Very impressive for his draft year. Dufour is cruising to game 58 next which is impressive as well while outpacing his teammates by almost 20 points. Not saying at all Dufour is a Huberdeau talent, just pointing out some facts

You can say it even though it may not be true. Sounds real good though.

Watched Meyer in the frozen four for first time, sort of reminded me of Jason Blake a bit. McKay I’d doubt he would sign here, not much of NHL shot here immediately.
The fact that everyone knows Trotz prefers the vets over a rookie doesn’t help. Most of these guys sign with a club where they have a chance to play immediately

Asking young players to play key roles early in career isn’t usual recipe for success on ice, they’ve brought Dobson along slowly and it is paying off. I think Trotz gets too much flack for young player development when I think it’s actually opposite in that he is giving young players the opportunity to learn and grow at right pace.

Agreed, I never said give young guys prominent roles. But also having a rep like Trotz where young guys aren’t likely to get much ice time isn’t a great enticement for young players to sign with the Isles. Ben Meyers who was the top NCAA free agent just signed with the Avs. That organization seems to do ok playing young players. So young players will sign there.

Yes I agree for sure that these college free agents specifically it’s tough for isles to offer up ice time or even specific path to league because of lack of roster spots and spots we do want to fill are going to be attempted to be filled by legit NHL players. Avs will have spots in their bottom six(Burokofsky Is UFA, Compher is too I think ) that a kid like Meyers could be looking at as opportunity and it fits Avs because of cap space.

Isles could have done the same thing. Why resign Cal? Couldn’t isles have offered Myers his spot instead? I’m not suggesting Myers is a better player than Cal. However the Isles need to add youth when the opportunities exist. And if not Myers then another younger player who better fits that role.

The player leading the team in total ice time this season is a year younger than Meyers, so I'd be surprised if age was the primary factor here.

With Trotz and Lou involved in the decision making you can be sure it’s age/experience. Just look at how slow Dobson and Wally were brought along. And they were high draft picks.

Wahlstrom and Dobson being picked at the same place and being the same age, while one is getting advanced way further than the other, would make your example serve more to indicate that age isn't the primary factor. That Dobson has outplayed Wahlstrom by a fair margin, and been given much more ice time and responsibility accordingly, makes it seem much more likely that one's play is the primary factor here.

This is very true.

Sorry for those who feel Wahlstrom hasn't been given a fair deal, primarily because Trotz 'n co. are too hard/critical of younger players.

Everything we're seeing from Dobson indicates the exact opposite.

He alone shoots down that argument completely.

Heck, becoming an impact Dman at that age is one of the hardest things to do in hockey.

We all like Wally, but it's clear that he's got a lot to figure out "upstairs". The hands are great, the physical aspect is very promising, the skating is a work in progress - but everything holding him back is happening up in that head of his.

You are both actually making my point. Wally hasn’t earned increased ice time with his play and it took until year 3 for Dobson to get meaningful playing time. So why would either of you think Trotz would give an undrafted NCAA free agent immediate ice time? Hasn’t history shown young players need to earn ice time under Trotz?

Let's put to rest the fallacy that Trotz "hates kids". Trotz is giving ice time to those who can help the team win, regardless of age and experience. Wahlstrom got a fair shot to impress in various aspects of the game and fell flat as the season went on. Dobson on the other hand was a healthy scratch once this season and his game flourished since then. Sebastian Aho got enough games in the NHL this season that a fair judgement could be made about him. Now Grant Hutton is getting a good look by the staff.

I'm sorry to those who pimped Oliver Wahlstrom's "great sniper's abilities" and felt we should just wind him up and watch him go. The NHL game is more than that.
