Dufour and Raty have certainly given the prospects core a good boost this season. Holmstrom looks to be developing also. Just need Bolduc to pick up where he left off last season. We have seen Salo already, looks like he will be sticking around next year with the Isles.
While I really hope the Isles find a way to pull out of their tailspin to start this season, I'm also very happy with the development (at least so far) of Sorokin (taking the next step towards being a franchise goalie in the NHL), Raty, Dufour, Holmstrom, Salo, etc.
I want to be very clear that my first choice is to see the Isles make the playoffs and make another deep run, however, for a team that has taken some very big steps over the last several seasons, a little adversity isn't necessarily a bad thing.
It allows for a terrific look at who works harder and steps up vs. who sulks and/or quits.
Organic growth isn't necessarily linear and, for a team that has taken multiple steps forward the last few years, a slight backslide, followed by adding some new blood, shuffling around some assets, etc. could be beneficial for the long term.
Of course it will be very important to NOT deal next year's first rounder, until closer to the trade deadline and when a better idea has been formed on if the Isles can get into legitimate playoff position.
No way I want to see them potentially move a lottery pick, which would either need to be protected (specifically if it ends up in the top 3) or only used in a larger deal for a young sniper, with term to play on the top line.
It is still a big positive that the Isles young prospects named above (and Sorokin), have been developing well. Hopefully Dobson and Wahlstrom get untracked and finish strong at the NHL level as well.
A down year for the overall team wouldn't be very exciting this season, however, it could present a great opportunity to retool a bit and get players, who might not otherwise see big minutes, some very important experience.
Challenging these young players to navigate initial growing pains, then come back better the following season ready to make an impact, will help the Isles get younger, faster and more skilled for the long haul.
