Because a man stands up for himself and he chose not to. In a rough sometimes violent sport like hockey laughing while your back is to someone is embarrassing.
I'm going to have to disagree. Retaliating with violence is never the answer. Good for you for choosing that path though. That's the problem I see with the older generations, always seeking out violence.

No. Not really. A few guys I love like Rielly and Tavares. But collectively, it's pretty unlikeable. Far cry from the Gilmour/Clark/Burns and Sundin/CuJo/Quinn eras.

I do get a chuckle though when there are fans who disparage so, so and so, but then will also throw out the line, "It's not the name on the back but the one in the front".

Anyone who thinks that Matthews just laughing while being rag dolled is ok just doesn’t understand hockey and competition no matter sport or in life
Wow, I've played soccer my whole life and never retaliated when getting shit on by other players. It pisses them off more and to me, bullying people during a sport is very unsportsmanlike, disrespectful, and shows that the person lacks personal integrity and dignity for others. I would just let my game speak for myself.

Simple minded appeasement of bully’s is not the way either.
If you let someone push you around it never ends and we will never win a playoff round.
Secondly it has absolutely nothing to do with a persons age. It’s about doing the right thing and not always but sometimes it’s fighting back.
I would have had more respect for him if he had just skated away

Don’t even get me going on soccer......my god, a soccer player gets tapped on the shin and he rolls around for 10 minutes in total agony......all the while looking for the ref to call a penalty

How can one skate away if his jersey is being held? My gosh man.

That's professional level Racer, in regard to your soccer comment. I disagree with how they "dive", I think it's unacceptable but it isn't like that at the amateur level.

In hockey, as in life, sometimes it is.

However, having Matthews break his hand in three places by punching the helmet of a Canadiens player is not the answer. We pay Matthews 11.6 mil to score goals and win games, not play the role of pugilist.

The more pressing question is: why didn't a Maple Leaf go out the next shift and run Suzuki? That's the answer I'd like to know.

It's quite possible that Matthews was trying to goad him into taking a penalty. That's what it looked like actually. A mix of trying to draw a penalty and look cool at the same time. I'm not saying I was impressed, but it wasn't a big deal and at least he didn't get himself suspended like some other idiot who used to play for the team.

I agree about the amateur soccer. I have a couple of friends that coach the kids soccer. However you can’t compare the 2 sports. Hockey is basically designed for massive physical violence......even within the rules, some of the legal hits are incredible. Fighting is an acceptable component of the game only policed by relatively minor penalties. Let me be clear I hate staged fights but when someone is running amok he needs to be dealt with

PS
I didn’t mean to disrespect soccer

You kids ought to watch an old episode of the Andy Griffith Show when Andy teaches Opie that in order to have self-respect and the respect of others, you need to learn to stand up for yourself. Physically if need be.
It's what makes you a man, not rationalizing your fear away on how you might break your hand on a helmet.

Matthews is a great hockey player but he ain't no leader and never will be.

After the way he played from games 5-7, he would have been better off fighting.

Thank you. Exactly.

not sure why my response showed up in the body of this post. But see above for my response
I was in Vancouver when Marchand punched Sedin in the face about 5 x and it really set the tone. Sedins were passsive but if ever there was a time to stick up for yourself that was it. Sedin had about 6 inches and 30 pounds on Marchand. If he would have belted him or ragdolled him which he could easily have done I believe it would have been a different series.

Larry Robinson was a gentle giant but every once in while when someone took liberties and went too far with him or a teammate he would go batshit crazy. It changes the dynamics if the opposition knows that if they get stupid they will pay. Bullies are gonna bully until you stand up for yourself.

So to your point, yes, I want to see every leaf player fight tooth and nail for themselves and each other. Get scrappy, don't take shit from anyone, ever. For all of Kadri's bad habits, he has that intangible. We seem to be going in the exact opposite philosophical direction.

The team is a manifestation of its' ultra-woke GM.

This is what made a player like Robinson special. His hit on Dornhoefer and scrap with Schultz against Philly helped his team win a Cup.

Pro tip: Play hockey

I guess apparently the Leafs need to have less skill to be considered 'likeable'
I have been watching this franchise since the 70's, I have never been more pissed with group player . They have a ton of skill but nothing in the playoffs nothing .
Alot of leaf fan have went through hell.
I love this team in the regular season but come playoff you just when they are going to wilt.

then what's the point of having skill?

ya what he should of done is punched him, got a penalty, they get scored on and then you cry about that stupid penalty

let’s forget that Matthews is like 6’3 and could dummy you

As much as you'd like to wish human nature away with woke messaging, one day as you mature, you younger generations will understand the reality that part of the human existance includes necessary violence.
