You cant deny she knows her Hockey. Doesnt mean she is the best at broadcasting but she understands the game.

That's the problem with her. It's not her understanding of what's going on, she's just a terrible speaker.

If she can't put together what she's saying before it leaves her mouth, then she has no business in any public speaking role. Especially one at the national level. Her problem is talking about something and then moving on if she thinks of something more interesting in the middle of talking about it.

etc
"Ovechkin is the games top scorer. He scored 53 goals las... he has 30 assists this season and that's why... Backstrom is a big part of the reason why he scored 53 goals last season."

She’s just putrid, and such a flames homer it’s unbearable
Huh? Last Oilers/Flames match she waxed poetic how McDavid was the greatest human that ever lived to come back from injury much stronger than before and stronger than she ever thought possible.

Flames homer indeed.

I mean, it’s true. He should have won the masterson last year.

She's monotone but she has insite and has the career to back her up. Howie Meeker had to most earsplitting voice you could imagine but he saw the game in a way no one else did and wasn't afraid to call them like he saw them. I'll take the substance over style anytime.

There isn't an anchor a broadcaster that doesn't get crapped on and if you are a woman you become a bigger target unfortunately. Imagine what she would get if she was more style than substance or just there as eye candy. Look at the guys with "personality" and see how they get treated.

Can't be worse than that time the Kings decided to use Cammi Granato as the radio color commentator.

Nick Nickson: "Well, what an exciting sequence that was, the Kings were really cycling well on that one, what do you think, Cammi?"

Cammi Granato: "..."

Nick Nickson: "..."

Cammi Granato: "Uh."

Nick Nickson: "Well, looks like we're ready for the faceoff, Kings lined up in the offensive zone..."

She is the worst that I have listened to for an NHL game. I found both involved in the play by play on Saturday night's broadcast to be quite bad, actually the worst tandem I have personally ever heard for an NHL game since I began watching hockey.

No joke I turned it to the Punjabi broadcast. Couldn’t understand what was being said but at least it was entertaining/exciting, the total antithesis of the Singh/Campbell combo.

I’d rather hear from her than Galley. Denis Potvin was also way worse, not sure where he’s at now.

Cassie Campbell is BY FAR the worst "color commentator" out there

Pierre McGuire is almost as bad, but he's "just between the glass" and not a true color commentator. It makes my gut turn when he takes up his moronic notes & reads where the player was born, and claims they are that nationality. Multiple times he has gotten it completely wrong by doing that, trying to look like he knows what he is talking about. Oh, and looking up player stats, and telling where they played college or junior hockey! Oh man, that's a sweet touch, no one else could've figure that one out

Also most US commentators suck, mostly by being boring AF. Although they are usually not as bad as Campbell. The Sportsnet / TSN main canadian feeds usually have good commentators, but the local / west canadian feeds have worse.

Among the local commentators, NESN has the best (Jack Edwards)

So if I want to experience a quality NHL game, I will opt for either the Canadian main feeds, or NESN.

You think an eight-time gold medal winning hockey player isn't knowledgeable about hockey?

That's idiotic.

Having knowledge doesn't mean you're a good commentator. Even the most knowledgeable hockey historian would probably do a bad job as a commentator, they would probably freeze & not get their message clearly through.

Usually the best hockey writers with the most info sound very boring in live interviews etc.

The play-by-play-men and commentators should be selected based purely on their performance at their jobs, not based on their hockey playing resumés etc. It would be extraordinarily unlikely that an elite player would also be an elite commentator

And probably anyone can agree, the best play-by-play-men of all time weren't usually great players themselves.

I think the most asinine comment from last night's broadcast was by Kevin Bieksa, when said "the bigger ship has the right of way", implying that McDavid should get calls just for being McDavid.
That wasn't what he implied.
He was basically suggesting that with the speed and the angle, McDavid had 'earned' that ice.

There are some gross and sexist takes in this thread.

I've literally seen bullshit like, 'women aren't logical like men, we need logical announcers', and 'she should be a house wife'. Gross, and those posters need to adapt to the fact that it isn't 1950.

...

However, Cassie Campbell-Pascal is an awful, awful colour commentator. She was a good defensemen, and I liked watching her play back in the day. She seems like a genuinely kind human being.

But her analysis is awful, and she (and Hrudey) would find a way to wax poetic if a Calgary Flame had a particularly arduous bowel movement. Bland, homerish (and nepotistic), shrill in her tone, and brings nothing to the game.

When I think of "really, really bad hockey broadcasters" the name Rob Ramage always screams out. He was the 3rd guy on the Blues broadcasts in the mid-90s after retiring, and he added less than nothing to them. Two gems that will forever be burned in my memory:

1. Interviewing Alexei Yashin in Ottawa, between periods. Mid-90s, I think it was 1996 because Yashin had sat out part of the season and only had a handful of games played. After a couple fairly normal questions about the game, Ramage turns to face Yashin and asks "so Alexei, what's it like to be a player in the National Hockey League?" Yashin looks over with this
are you f***ing kidding me look, says something like "yeah, it's great I guess" and there's 2 more not-quite-as-dumb questions and Alexei is really short answering both, and as Ramage goes to wrap up the interview Yashin walks off before Ramage can thank him.

2. From I think the '97-98 season: Blues are at home down a goal in the 3rd period, Ken Wilson throws it down for Ramage for thoughts on what the Blues need to do. Ramage, with this big dumb smile on his face, utters: "the Blues are down by a goal ........... they need to score another goal if they want to win this game ............. back to you Ken!" to which Wilson responds, "thank you, Rob, for those ... insightful ... comments."

You do know she's not reading your comment, right? Don't expect a personal message from her saying, "Finally someone who gets me. You're my hero!".

She's terrible and hasn't improved one bit since this thread was started. P.J. Stock was fired for less.
