I think we did a good job of managing the roster imo. The only one that hurts is Petro but we gave him a very competitive offer. Maybe we could have changed players but we did a decent job of keeping majority of the talent. Any roster is going to change over time and I think we did a good job of trying to mitigate the loses

We offered less money with a modified NMC that covered the first few years. This has been litigated to death here and I don't want to get into it again, but we need to not outright lie to ourselves about this.

I think our offer was a competitive one. Was it the best, evidently not but there was a line they didn’t want to cross. It’s not like we offered him a shit contract

We have a really busy schedule coming up. In about a month, we’ll know if it’s time to rebuild. Army has been known to sell of UFA’s with shatty and Stastny. Wouldn’t be surprised if he did it again. This isn’t a cup roster and you can’t let ROR, Tarasenko and Barbs walk for free.

The money was basically the same when you factor in the 8th year. We've also never given out a NMC and it just so happens to be what he demanded, something he knew he would not get so he doesn't look like the bad guy to stupid fans.

Yes, if Pietrangelo wanted to play the last year of his contract and not get the standard protection for players of his caliber, then the offer could be considered competitive. Which is to say it wasn't at all. Doug refusing to cross his completely arbitrary line in the sand on NMCs is not some ploy Pietrangelo made for good will and if you think it was maybe you shouldn't be calling other people stupid.

Standard protection? Yeah maybe because there’s a lot of dumb GMs in the league.

The Blues offered him a NTC. If that’s not enough protection and he thinks his game is going to fall off so much that he wants to be protected from waivers, well, that’s not the team’s problem.

In other words, yes, our offer was not competitive with the one he signed, cool.

If you want to be blind to reality and think an offer over 8 mil per season with a NTC isn’t competitive, sure, you can go ahead and do that.

The offers were 8 million with an NTC to 8.8 with an NMC, yet I'm "blind to reality" for saying that the latter is clearly better? Are we just sticking our heads in the sand now?

They offered 10% more AAV. We offered 14% more years and 4% more total money. One could argue the difference between a NTC and a NMC is negligible for an elite player. I guess it boils down to how you define “clearly”.

Call up some Sprinfield folks to fill in some D spots, sit some of these fools down and try that. It seems when Binny is confident, the team plays with purpose and that blueline is so bad that I can't see anyone being confident when your dmen are a highly paid comedy routine.

I have a ton of faith in our minor league affiliate, whatever they're doing, we need to be doing up here.

Springfield is barely over .500 (5W 4L 1SOL). I don't think they'd change that much up here in the NHL right now.

What's their team culture like?

Right now the Blues have traded, lost or let walk theirs. If the T-Birds have a solid locker room culture, bringing a few kids up might help ignite something. It might not. But you have to try something.

Agreed. That will happen soon, IMO.

You can’t fire the coach or make a big trade yet, so really, this is the only way a change can be made. It worked last season when guys from Springfield came up. That was just when we had tons of injuries but they provided a spark. Let’s see if it can happen again, their record is irrelevant.

Agreed, The Petro money difference wasn't that big. If he wanted to be a Blue, he would be here.

On the flip side, Perron wanted to be here and DA gave him the shaft.

Good teams feel like family. I listened to an interview with the great Scotty Bowman the other day talking about THE Redwings team we all hate. He said the environment felt like one big family. You could gather that watching the games. We've lost that this season.
