Well the journalists were almost silenced when Glen Sather took the word - an unique person in hockey and will be missed, and they tried hard to win the cup. However I agree with some here: "This is not good news for Jeff Gorton." We don`t know if the next president have a similar opinion like Glen Sather. I base that on Larry Brooks article about Sather, but one thing is certain it`s time for a new chapter and beginning with Rangers for sure.

By consistent playoff teams- I'm referring to turning bottom barrel teams that made the playoffs after a turnaround.
Yep, consider where Columbus was BEFORE he got there. Their franchise player had just asked out and been traded. They were spiraling. He helped stabilize them surprisingly well.

I wasn't alarmed at first cause I figured we'd just to the Gorton thing, but if we're actively shopping for a replacement, this is f***ing huge.

This could change the organization.

I can't see any realistic way Yzerman would come here, but I'd imagine Gorton would last another year or two max if he did

This is not a position that I care about. I liked having Slats there, because I had got accustomed to his face. I couldn't care less who gets the position, as long as Gorton continues to have final say with the roster. Changing the decisive voice mid-rebuild is a scary proposition.

Serious question: does Slats even do anything? When I first heard about this I figured no big deal, Gorton is going to run everything like he has been anyway but now we're looking at Yzerman and Messier? Does this position even really need to be filled? Can we just hire a Slats cardboard cut out, give Gorton the keys to the car and keep on as we were?

Here some names SportingNews article highlighting some potential names for Sens job, there are two that intrigue me:

Martin Brodeur, Ron Francis headline potential candidates for Senators' president of hockey ops

Al MacIsaac

Current job: Senior vice president of hockey operations, Chicago Blackhawks

Age:
51

While the Nova Scotia native remains relatively unknown outside Chicago, the current Blackhawks executive has been an integral fixture within the organization for the past 18 seasons. MacIsaac has the ear of team president John McDonough, having held an operational role under four different general managers. Three Stanley Cup rings on the resume could certainly help MacIsaac's cause.

Laurence Gilman

Current job: Assistant general manager, Toronto Maple Leafs

Age
: 54

The current Maple Leafs assistant general manager, Gilman is known as one of the most intelligent and respected minds in the sport, and is credited with developing the current Expansion Draft regulations. The 54-year old acted in several roles with the Coyotes from 1998-2007 including assistant general manager and vice president of hockey operations. Prior to joining the Maple Leafs, Gilman held identical positions with the Canucks from 2008-2015.

I don't want JD, Heard an interview with him and hearing him talk about analytics rubbed me the wrong way, and not like he did Amazing with STL or CBJ, he did fine.

Get an outsider who will build an actual analytics department, someone modern.

Showing no emotion and not reacting to losses is a great trait for a GM.

As for Messier, he could be a pep talker for the youth. That’s about all I’d let him do.

You might be exactly right- Drury could be fantastic as a GM. I have really no way to know. My issue was how I read a lot of posts promoting Drury as this great, well deserving memeber of the Rangers organization while those same people argued Mess should not have that role. It’s honestly laughable how seemingly disloyal that comes across to me when they guy who brought this organization the only Stanley cup in modern history is devalued more than some non-important slightly better than average NHL player who played no role at all in moving this franchise ahead as a player.

Again, I have no idea if Mess would be a logical replacement at all but the willingness of so many fans to just cast the guy aside is really concerning.

Drury,Sakic,Rob Blake, Robitaille,Yzerman,Shanahan. They all got higher level jobs without serving organizations in any other capacity. Every time Messier's name is brought up, it seems like he gets cast aside for lack of experience. The other names are never mentioned for lack for experience. I also dont know if he is going to be a logical replacement. But the reasoning against him doesnt seem to be warranted .

Brooks article was very clear about keeping the current structure intact. I stay away from Messier, at times he is overly dramatic and the focus comes back to him. Gorts Drury and Quinn are young and represent the new wave of building a team. Lets hire a president who can modernize our operations and is totally committed to this type of rebuild.

Most of those that you named worked their way up from lower positions to get where they are. Messier could do the same if he stopped taking do-nothing jobs and actually worked for one of these positions

f*** loyalty, this is a business. You know what you get for being “loyal”? You get the Edmonton front office being run by a bunch of idiots because they won cups as players.

Messier doesn’t deserve consideration. He isn’t qualified and has done nothing to show that he can successfully head an oragnization. I don’t give a shit about 1994.

JD will get the job. He is close with Sather. Davidson was here for the first 6 years of Sather’s tenure. They became good friends when JD was a broadcaster in Canada. The Oilers were the top team. JD did many Oilers games. He became close with that group. I remember reading they would socialize together with their wives. Davidson has a contract with Columbus but if he wants to take the Rangers job, Columbus is going to stand in his way? As long as he can get out of his contract, it’s his job.

Sather asked JD if Danny Blackburn could live with him. JD asked his family. They said yes. He wanted to ask them first.

Blackburn's room this season is here in Westchester County in the comfortable home of John Davidson, the former Rangers goaltender and longtime Rangers television analyst. His quarters are adjacent to the family room, where he can watch hockey games on a satellite dish, play air hockey or Bubble Boy hockey, shoot pool, throw darts or simply kick back and relax.

''There's no shortage of things to do in that house,'' Blackburn said. ''That's for sure.''

The idea occurred to Sather and Davidson during the preseason. Davidson recalled a group conversation at Madison Square Garden when someone asked off-handedly where Blackburn would live if he made the team. Sather replied, ''
“We'll put him at J. D.'s house.''

HOCKEY; Rangers Rookie Feels at Home as a Lodger

JD still has his home in Westchester. I read he comes back here every summer. He has two daughters. I remember hearing an interview with him a long time ago. He said one or both of his daughters lives in New York. One of them is Canadian. One is American. JD did HNIC for a few years in the mid 1980’s. He moved back to NY in 1986 when Esposito became the GM. He said his daughters were rooting for their home countries during the 2002 gold medal game. His wife Diana was stuck in the middle trying to maintain the peace.

Sather likes Gorton. He is not stepping aside and hiring the guy who will fire his handpicked replacement as GM. JD doesn’t want to be the GM. He is smart enough to know Gorton is doing a good job. We can quibble about this and that.

JD inherited Larry Pleau in St. Louis. Knew each other from the Rangers. They worked well together. Jarmo Kekalainen was in the organization. Pleau decided to retire. JD hired Doug Armstrong who was fired in Dallas to replace Pleau. Jarmo got pissed and went back to Europe.

Sather will be an advisor to Dolan. He will still have his ear. Sather says it’s Dolan’s decision. Dolan will rely on Sather ‘s advice.

Who cares if the President is overly big on analytics or not? It is the GM who is making the trades.

No, Lil Stevie would not make me happy.
Lol. Now I am curious...

Kind if ironic we play the Jackets tonight and potentially control some of their playoff fate. A Ranger win, a jackets playoff miss, and JD with Jarmo may be unemployed anyway.

I love JD but I have to be honest that this go for broke cup push in Columbus leaves me a little concerned about him coming over here. He backed the purge in '04 and showed patience as a manager since then, but its alarming to see such cavalier decion making. It's almost like their jobs were on the line to make the playoffs. Which brings me back to the first paragraph.

Not to insult anyone but if I was over 15 years old and wanted to bring Messier in because he helped us to win a cup I'd be embarrassed and wouldn't double down by questioning others who want to make decisions based on logic and not feelings.

I’ll ask again: if Slats is becoming asenior/special advisor, won’t he likely be picking his replacement?
Carp said he’ll be assisting Dolan in the search for a new president.

Which I’m fine with, because Sather knows what’s going on and he knows that Gorton is trying to carry out a long plan, so I don’t think he’ll hire anybody that’ll get in Gorton’s way.

I think its more bout seeing the writing on the wall with Panarin and Bob.

Those guys are gone this offseason. Your best chance at making any noise for the foreseeable future is right now.
