He may not get the most points of all current players but if I could pick any one player to build a team around then as of right now there's no doubt I'm picking Matthews. Goal scoring, defense has been great, taking and throwing hits...yup

There's a part of me that's been thinking for a while McDavid and Matthew's may be the new Gretzky vs Lemieux debate. Especially as more time goes on and they accomplish more.

No. Mario and Wayne were so far ahead of the next best guy it wasn't even a race. When Wayne and Mario were in their primes, there was no argument who the top 2 in the game were. It was unanimous.
Right now, it's far from that. Drai and MacKinnon, those guys are clearly in the discussion. The top 2 aren't unanimous like it was with Wayne and Mario

Regardless, credit where credit is due. Matthews has been next level this year. Absolutely incredible.
I think McDavid is firmly first. His contribution in the stat sheet outweighs the negative he is on D and is more than Matthews on offense and defense.
But don't even get me started and compare him to guys like Draisaitl, Eichel, MacKinnon, Pettersson etc. Matthews is quite easily the second best player in the league.

Tavares was injured last year and has been crap this year. crap for him is still 17 points in 19 games, but that isn't an 11 million dollar player.
that's not going to make me start breaking out the big words yet though.
plenty of time for him to get back where he should be.
