Is Auston Matthews the best player in the world ?

No, it is McDavid, as it has been for the past few years. Matthews is an elite star though, and he is currently tearing it up right now.

Reminds me of the thread on the mainboards. Auston only scoring so much because its all north division he can't improve that much in a year. Yet it's ok that Ovechkin went from 46 to 65 in a single year at the same age.

Yeah. Matthews is just lucky he doesn’t have to face the Florida Panthers, don’t you know?

Its not only Matthews that is feasting on the North division as the best/top goal scorers in the entire NHL all reside in the Div,

are tied with 9 goals and in the top 10 in goals scored all from the North Div.

PS. Its hard to rule out QofC in the North when 9 of the top 12 goal scorers all reside in the same Div. ;)

He still has quite the lead on all of them though, especially if you look at games played.

He has stretches where he looks like he might be, but they're just stretches.

Don't get me wrong: He is an amazing player and probably top ten in the NHL, but he needs to at least have a season where he's in the Hart conversation to justify this question. Otherwise Leafs fans asking if he's the best player in the world look like foolish homers.

McDavid is top five in Hart voting every year. Matthews hasn't yet placed higher than tenth.

It's impossible to get a Hart trophy when your coach doesn't give you Hart trophy minutes.

5 game winning goals already in 17 games - He's unbelievable
He certainly is , he has changed his game dramatically from the previous years, through nutrition and heavy training and a commitment to playing the right way and so dogged on the puck retrieval’s , his passing is better and skating is better and he looks and plays large out there ...
This is the tip of the iceberg for him and let’s not forget the importance of a set up player
go Leafs Go

This is just a factor of games played as North hasn't missed any games.

It's simply that the Canadian teams have probably the most talented and dangerous offensive forwards of any division, period.

I don’t care if he is regarded as the best player in the league or not. I will be totally fine with having his amazing talent on our team, and knowing that every single player and coach we meet will fear us when his name is in the roster.

McDavid id say is the best high end talent, and McKinnon... but funny after saying that I still do believe Matthews is the more complete player. Who do you win a championship with more often when you look at other cup winners?

I'd say a guy like Matthews with the right complimentary players gets you a cup before the other guys... and I think the Leafs are pretty close to the right makeup for a team.

So McDavid is the best player I guess to put up points. His speed is incredible and his ability to make plays at top speed is unreal... but Matthews is so close because he wants to be the best in all areas not just offensively.

What division can match this offensively?

Gaudreau - McDavid - Draisaitl
Tavares - Matthews - Marner
Connor - Scheifele - Ehlers
Miller - Pettersson - Boeser
(Tkachuk - Nylander - Wheeler)

Squeeze this season’s Toffoli and Suzuki in there somewhere as well. Good firepower in the division

Sorry I don’t agree
Great surprising production from 2 mid range players

I don’t necessarily disagree about Toffoli, hence my comment about ”this season”. I have him replace J.T. Miller any time though. Regarding Suzuki, I don’t pick him before any of the C picked, but his potential is great. Habs have themselves a gem there.

Before the season started, I ranked Matthews at #3 behind McDavid and MacKinnon. I'd put him ahead of MacKinnon now.

#2 hockey player in the world
#1 goal scorer in the world

Don't think we have to squeeze Suzuki's 16gl/66pt pace (and 15gl/51pt pace including last yesr) into that all-division squad tbh.

No. McDavid is the best player in the world at this point in time.

Matty is awesome and super elite. Likely the best goal scorer currently but not #1 player in the world

Here’s my take ....
Can you think of more comparisons?
Or are you against this theory ?
Where would you rank him and project his career to be ?
How about this year ?
What trophies do you think he may earn this year ?
I’m just putting it out there for discussion
I think you can say that AM is like Kopitar with way more offensive skill
Of like Malkin with more of being a complete player
Or like Draistl with more defensive awareness
Or like Mcdavid with way less speed but better defensively and better goal scorer
Or like Crosby but with youth on his side and size
Or like McKinnon with better defensive awareness and better goal scorer
So all in all if things continue, he is and will continue to be the best player in hockey this year and years to come
He may or may not be , but at the moment , I think he is .
Go Leafs Go
He is not the best but I do think he is the second best.
He is truly incredible to watch.
