Is Auston Matthews the best player in the world ?

He always said and still does say that Bobby Orr is the best player in the world. I think that in 1993 Grapes said that Gilmour was great, but I don't remember him saying that he was the best. Mathews is in the top 5 this year and statistically the best, but the sample size is too small.
If you were Seattle which 4 are you taking before Mathews?

I don't care about the semantics of if he's the best or top 3, 5, 10 whatever. I view players in tiers and he is absolutely in the top tier with McDavid, Mack, whoever else you want to put there.

Fact is, he is the best player the Leafs have had in my lifetime, been watching since the 90-91 season. He might not have the crazy speed and flash of McDavid but he executes such high skill plays with such ease and nonchalance it's an absolute treat to watch.

Assuming they play their whole or most of their careers on the Leafs, Matthews and Marner are going to shatter team records. They will never have the cup count of the old legends but goals, assists, points etc are theirs.

Hardest to defend he said actually for context of his answer. He said you defend him perfect and he’ll shoot right through the goalie
He also just opens up space for everyone else just by being on the ice. Thornton goal was classic. Tieney leaves the front of the net while Marner shoots to cover Mathews. Thornton tip slides right by where Tierney was.

It’s harder and harder for the other teams to defend that line when AM and MM are at the top of their game like they are now , throw in a savvy veteran who is top 5-6 all time in assists and it’s fireworks in the opponents zone , and don’t forget that they all are defensively conscience out there as well .

He’s an amazing player, but he’s not the best in the world. Swap Matthews and McDavid and Toronto gets better and Edmonton gets worse.

I think Matthews is the second best player and better defensively but McDavid does things no one else can do, and that’s not a dig on Matthews.

These best and worst arguments are always so silly. They also come down to the criteria used and how that critieria is weighted. Some criteria and weighting will put Matthews. Other criteria and weightings will put different players on top. Just seems silly to argue about.

Too many criteria’s ....
Also isn’t this the ministry for silly arguments ?
It said so on the door sign ..
Well if it’s not , I’ll have to take my silly arguments elsewhere then .
Oh by the way didn’t I see you at the ministry of silly walks ?
Go silly Leafs go .....
Next time I’ll have to bring in my philosopher acquaintance and my brother the Astro physicist and cousin Frazier the biology major and captain of his debate team to make sure that every argument I bring up is not as silly and do it has credentials along with seriousness
Good day sir

Whoever thought a homegrown leaf would have a thread about being the best player in the world and it not being locked up immediately. Whether we win this or get humiliated in the playoffs this really is a golden age for the Leafs. Fun, exciting elite hockey.

As a Habs fan, we’ve had some hot starts similar to yours recently with no results in the end due to flaws with the team make up. We can help you threw the disappointment of being deceived after this season ends.

I think McDavid is better right now, but the gap is not as wide as some people might think. They're effectively #1 and 2 right now, followed closely by MacKinnon, Draisaitl, and Marner. Honourable mention to Barkov.

In terms of who will have the better overall career, I'd say it's a coin toss right now - I feel like McDavid in his peak years will be the best, but that Matthews' game will age better as they head into their 30s. His release alone will keep him on an elite trajectory like Ovechkin, even if other parts of his game eventually decay with age.
