Am I missing some era adjusted tool or something?

Regardless of the numbers, I think we can safely conclude that Matthews is a better goalscorer than Conacher on account of the fact that Conacher shot on goalies that looked like this:

Matthews could score from the blue-line every time on this guy, if he tried to make a save he'd probably die.
I couldn't imagine playing net in the NHL without a mask. It reminds me of a Bobby Hull Quote. "During warmups I would take a slap shot and ring it around the boards head high. Just to put the thought into the goalie's head.

Whoever thought a homegrown leaf would have a thread about being the best player in the world and it not being locked up immediately. Whether we win this or get humiliated in the playoffs this really is a golden age for the Leafs. Fun, exciting elite hockey.

Lmao, not that it's a remotely fair comparison but the thought alone is actually funny and dangerous at the same time for a goalie with no helmet.

He’s very good. I want a parade. The raptor parade was the last great gathering of people. Let the Leaf parade be the next one.

I’m glad you mentioned the mask thing
I get riled up by fans and friends that put down goalies of past eras ...
Especially in the 50s and 60s and 70s
Check out our Mr Bower in a montage of him taking sticks and pucks in the mouth and face , there’s one save he makes on his side on the ice where he literally stretches out his neck so that his face stops the puck , unreal unreal unreal
Look at Sawchucks face full of stitches .
How about Mr Goalie Mr Glenn Hall
502 yes that 502 consecutive games in a row
I’m always blown away by these athletes that paved the way for all the glory and $ that today’s players receive .
It’s ridiculous when you hear people compare today’s players and sports and equipment and science and guts up against the yesteryear of sports
I for one give all athletes of the past the biggest kudos , especially goalies
Go Leafs Go

McDavid is clearly the better player now, but it's not by much.

I have a feeling though, 10 years down the line, assuming that both stay healthy, this is going to be a much closer debate, and perhaps even in favour of Matthews. Auston is on the 'better team', is playing a more complete game at aged 23, is scoring more goals (which always trumps assists and points), and has a game that is going to age better in the late 20s/early 30s than McDavid's.

In short, if we're talking about peak seasons among the GOATs, I'd go with McDavid - but in terms of the long term and long haul, I'd go with Matthews. In terms of team and career success, it's also Matthews. The Leafs have their problems and skeptics, but I see the Oilers a few steps behind the Leafs.

The extremes goalies went through for not very much pay, unbelievable. They all had to have offseason jobs.

Ahh, Ok, He didn't just spend his whole career in Toronto is the issue I was having (for some reason I thought he was a lifer)

I don’t know if you know the story of Tim Horton opening his first Donut shop and having Mr Bower there a guest to sign autographs for 25$ for the event and all you can eat donuts
Sports history is so cool and our Leafs have a deep rooted incredible story to tell ..
I know I’ve said this in the past
But just in case you didn’t catch it
Our middle sons name is

Keon Kennedy Leaf

then his last name

I love Matthews and he’s in the S tier of hockey but I’d drive him to the airport for McDavid.

Yes not a lifer, but minimum requirement is 20 games played to be on the list. Why 20 games played? I don't know.

I heard another story where Bower was worried about the up and comer Sawchuck. He asked Shack to whistle one by his head. Apparently shack took out a chunk of Sawchucks ear. My word!
Shack was crazy enough to do that on his own lol
Only 6 jobs for a starter in the NHL in the world , I guess you do what you have to do

Grapes used to call Gilmour the best player in the world.
He always said and still does say that Bobby Orr is the best player in the world. I think that in 1993 Grapes said that Gilmour was great, but I don't remember him saying that he was the best. Mathews is in the top 5 this year and statistically the best, but the sample size is too small.
