Is Auston Matthews the best player in the world ?

Even though this is on our own board, and even though Matthews is something unreal, this is an embarrassing thread.

No... And that's absolutely no disrespect to Matthews.

Matthews is in a discussion with 2 or 3 guys for the #2 spot, but he's not Connor McDavid. The speed, vision and intelligence with which McDavid plays the game is on another level.

With McDavid's 5 points (hatty) with 6 minutes left in the 2nd period tonight, he's just doing more of what he does.

12 goals and 25 assists for McDavid now. 37 points in 20 games. Just another outrageous season.

McDavid had 3 straight 100+ point seasons in his first 3 full seasons in the NHL, followed by 97 points in 64 games last year, when the season got cut short. He was on pace for well over 100 points again. Right now he's pacing for 100+ points in a 56 game season FFS... No idea if he'll ever play on a Championship caliber squad to cement his legacy, but he very well might go down as a better player than Crosby, who has had 6, 100 point seasons in his career. Who knows how many McDavid will have.

Can't tell me these guys don't read this forum or at least have someone keeping tabs. :sarcasm::laugh:

Realistically he probably heard Matthews had another 4 point game. The thing that gets me about McDavid tonight is that he already got the hat trick and 5th point not even halfway through the game.

Although I will say Matthews may get to McDavids level someday, and I do think he is already a more complete player, McDavid is just so consistently SUBLIME offensively it's almost not fair for the NHL.

McDavid almost always has games with 3 points or more on the regular and most times 4 points lol

Offensively McDavid is a transcendent player.

I never, ever, ever thought Auston Matthews would be this good. But he is. He's probably the best Leaf in history at this point. He's such an unconventional player, too - he has a real individuality about the way he plays the game. He's a f***in artist out there.

Is he the best player in the world right now? Well, so far, what would you rather have -- Auston Matthews at 29 points, or Connor McDavid at 32?

Are the things Matthews does that McDavid does insufficient to bride that 3 point gap?

Whatever the answer is, it's gotta be in the argument. Sorry haters.

8 point gap now, McDavid has 5 tonight and a hat trick lol. Matthews has another 2 games to close the offensive gap again.

It’s almost like McDavid is good at this hockey thing. Matthews is a great hockey player. McDavid is on another level, and that’s no disservice to Matthews.
Exactly. McDavid is a tier above.

McDavid and Matthews are #1 and #2 in the NHL now.

Mathews needs a hatrick next game to tie Gretzky's record 21 goals in 20 games to start the season.

Ovi and Crosby''s fastest 20 goals to start a season came in their 22nd game.

MacKinnon has 4 goals this season though. He is not in the conversation.
For sure has had a down year. IHaving said that I would not bet against him catching fire at some point, he's too talented not to. They've only played 12 games and the guy has had 3 straight seasons of over 90 points, not to mention is money in the playoffs. I have Matthews at 2 but Mackinnon is firmly a top 3 guy in the league for me.

McDavid had 3 straight 100 points seasons in his first 3 full years in the NHL. He was stuck on 97 last year only because the season was cut short. He's pacing for 1oo+ points in 56 games this year... Auston Matthews' best season was 80 points last year and he wasn't on pace for 100. He hasn't even sniffed 100 points in a season in his NHL career.

The gap is significant, IMO.
