Just checking Reddit today, and guess who's doing an AMA?
Doug MacLean. Yes, that Doug MacLean.

Enjoy
a couple of fun answers from the maclean ama:

what move would he do over:
Good luck this year to the Jackets . Obviously i should have taken Kopitar over Brule but not one team had Kopitar rated in top 10 except us he went 11. Imagine him and Nash together. I have had many sleepless nights over that pick.
on why brule didn't pan out:
Brule was so good in junior it was scary . Got injured in camp , fractured strum , then broken leg , then concussions . Watched him a memorial cup a year after we drafted him in Moncton and everything scout in building thought we CBJ had a future star . He was that good . Great kid , really disappointed how it turned out .
on letting ray whitney walk:
My owner would not let me pay him what he wanted . We tried hard to convince ray to stay .
on zherdev:
He should have been a superstar. Unbelievable talent , maybe the best talent i ever saw, but his attitude and off ice problems ruined him . Tough time adjusting . Sad really . Not a bad kid .

I don't agree with Doug often but he's bang on about Zherdev, should've been a Kovalev type, top 10 NHL Russian player ever, but his off ice issues were just too big to overcome

Doug's front office was a train wreck in helping Euro players, especially Russians. I don't think the Svitov situation could've been avoided but not helping Zherdev get acclimated and to be fine with his partying was just a head shaker
What happened with svitov? That was like right when I was getting into hockey

Seems way more user friendly and useful compared to the new NHL app.

Addresses tickets issue for STH.
The app is pretty nice. Well done.

All I want them to fix is the horrible UX of the fanbucks website. Why do I have to approve cookies and log in every single time I leave the page? Even if all that's happened is my phone screen locked? Why can I not save a card on file so I don't have to step out of line mid-transaction to re-add my credit card info to load more money? Who thought this vendor was a good idea?

Can single-game buyers access their tickets on the CBJ app or just STHs?
You are logging in with a Ticketmaster account so I don't see why single gamers couldn't use it all the same. Give it a shot! :)

Would be great feedback for them if you end up not being able to..

Frankly, I'm shocked CBJ spent money on something like this given the NHL app already being available -- and that it turned out so well.

Just spoke with my ticket rep about something unrelated but he asked at the end of the call if I'd seen the email about the new app. They're really proud of it. They're also working on a better FanBucks integration to the new app. GiveX hasn't approved it yet, but it's coming. That's enough for me!

My memory is a bit fuzzy but the story is that after signing a new contract his soon to be wife had a medical emergency for either herself or a newborn and was unable to get help before it was almost too late because she didn't speak English. She probably told Svitov she didn't feel safe here and they needed to go back home ASAP.

I am not saying you are wrong because I don't really know but why does there have to be personal reason why he left the NHL? Maybe he just realized he was not good enough to play in the NHL and decided to go home to make a living.

If he thought that he wouldn't have signed a new contract six weeks before.

It's too bad this site has lost the older posts from back then but I believe this story was confirmed by someone who posted here that knew people in the front office (much like Fro and whoever he knows)

That's exactly it. Svitov was living in a Downtown Condo right beside Nationwide Arena. His wife didn't speak English and there was an emergency with their child. She didn't know what to do, luckily a neighbor next door was a nurse and was able to assist.
There was other things - like when Brule came over neither his agent or the CBJ made sure Zherdev's old Condo had internet, so I passed by him as he sat in the hallway connected to another neighbor's wi-fi. Again a lot of this falls on the player but you would think the CBJ would make sure of things like that few players who have never been to Columbus before.
At the time it made the CBJ look at what they needed to provide to new players. Shortly after the CBJ did change some things, including getting the wives more involved with each other and one of managements wife (can't recall if it was Priest's wife or Jarmo's wife I think) took it upon herself to make sure new players/spouses had a contact list and understood 911 and other essentials.
It was truly a sh1t show for a long time. But sounds like it's better now.

It was Howson’s wife who put together a list of contacts and services for the wives. My wife got a lot of business from being on that list

Julie was the one who handled player support when I worked there. I know she’s still there but I’m not sure in what capacity.

Isn’t that part of Nash’s job, or at least his original FO duties? That whole player support stuff?
I think it’s actually Nash’s BFF Aaron Johnson. He’s like the “players’ concierge” or whatnot. He also helps them get settled and familiar with the city. Gets them event tix, etc like a concierge, if I recall correctly.
Not sure if he’s still in that role this year.
