I was referring to W's/L's guys. Yes the drops in GAA and Save % is wider than his record, but couple that with new pads, and a slow start, that happens. He can still get those under control, and it's not like they're bad anyway

I'm a big fan of Bob, too, but it's not like those numbers are all that good, either. Yes, he still has time to return to top form and he seemed to be headed that way after his return from injury, but it is no service to him to minimize how far off his season numbers are from his Vezina performance of last year. With the additional scoring the team has managed to put up (much to my surprise!), they'd already be solidly in the playoff picture had Bob performed up to his '12-'13 standards.

Your right. I'd even go further and say they are approaching poor for a 5.6 million goaltender. We need to clean up our play in front of him as well.

Anywhere close and we're golden. To be fair out play in front of him hasn't been as good either.

With apologies to pete (but, hey man you gotta stay on top of things :) ) here's the follow-up article from The Coach

http://www.theunionblue.com/2014/02/26/big-picture/

It still doesn't make sense. Let's say for a second that MacKenzie gets something in line with other fourth-liners around the league, which is something between $1.3 and $1.6 mil a year. What exactly is the savings to replace him with someone who makes half that? We're not talking about a cascade effect to everyone else on the roster, we're talking about one contract for one guy that wouldn't break the bank under any circumstances.

As for "what Detroit did", I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that Detroit got extremely lucky, and it had absolutely nothing to do with market ineffeciencies. Relative to the rest of the league, they went bonkers in the draft on European players, ignoring the very real consequences like military service and spontaneous conscription that had served as roadblocks. When Detroit drafted Fedorov and Konstantinov in 1989, the Pan-European Picnic hadn't even taken place; Lidstrom was drafted the same year with no guarantee that he'd come over. Kozlov was drafted in 1990, with the USSR still very much in existence and still hostile to the idea of their top young players leaving. That Detroit got every single one of those players to come over isn't a testament to their brilliant scouting, it's a clear example of how much luck plays in building a successful team. Imagine if Fedorov, Kozlov, and Konstantinov all got the Alexander Svitov treatment: preparing to come over, and instead being grabbed in the middle of the night and conscripted into the Red Army. Does Detroit become a dynasty? Do they ever win a Cup? Do they even win a division title? How much would a team win with their second-best forward being Ray Sheppard, and a top pairing that features Steve Chiasson?

You said "most areas" ... which lead us all to believe that you meant "most areas", including GAA and save percentage.

Wins and losses mean nothing for a goaltender if their save percentage and goals against aren't up to snuff. How many times in the 90s did you see people wondering about the goaltending situation in Detroit, with Chris Osgood? The entire hockey world knew that, in spite of the fact that Osgood was winning games, he was the weakest link on a dominant team.

Now, in no way am I comparing Bobrovsky to Osgood or calling him weak - but you can't classify wins and losses as judgment for a goaltender. Great teams can have bad goaltenders, and bad teams can have great goaltenders ... it lies much deeper.

If baseball writers understood this argument, Bert Blyleven would have been a first-ballot HOFer and guys like Rube Marquard and Burleigh Grimes would have been relegated to footnotes in history.

Bob through 38 starts last season (which was all he had that year)

21 Wins - 11 Losses - 6 OTL's. .932 Save % and 2.00 GAA with 4 shutouts

This Year through 38 starts

20 Wins - 15 Losses - 3 OTL's .900 Save % and 2.57 GAA with 2 shutouts.

For those saying he's had a 'down year'. He's relatively close in most areas than last year.
Bobs got a .915 Save %.

Another case of no respect.

You really want us to be #1? I'm guessing current struggles have a lot to do with the list and the Jackets are at least headed in the right direction. Buffalo is up there i'm guessing, Oilers, Flames, Islanders, Florida. If anything, they are respecting us more by not having us at the top of the list, because I'm pretty certain what we're going through (at least now) isn't in the same company as those teams.

Please see post #225 in the Trade Deadline thread, dated 2/26, EK. Can't say I'm really on top of many things, but I do try to honor my commitments - you asked me to post it when it showed up, so I did!

My apologies. I did look in this thread but missed it in the other.

Hahaha that'd be hilarious. He'd be the most scrutinized player to win the award not only in the nhl but his own fanbase

"Critics will point out that the Jackets rank a lowly 28th in attendance this season, averaging 14,159 a game. I would flip that argument around and point out that I can't believe there are as many hard-core fans in Columbus as there are after 13 seasons of mostly misery. Which to me suggests a market place that's just begging for this team to finally make the playoffs a regular habit."

I'm really glad he made this point.
