Ranking The AHL's Top 10 Teams So Far In 2024-25

1. Hershey Bears

The defending Calder Cup champion Bears loaded up again this summer, but opening the season with five games in eight nights would be a test for any club. For a team that has gone into deep June the past two seasons, those demands are that much more pronounced, something that head coach Todd Nelson has acknowledged. Until the Bears are able to iron out the normal early-season inconsistencies, they have enough to win games on talent alone. In the past, the Bears sometimes lacked all-out firepower; this season’s team is averaging four goals per game. ...

2. Toronto Marlies

Goaltender Artur Akhtyamov, a 2021 fourth-rounder, had shown some potential last season in the KHL. But he came to North America with only 21 games in that league behind him. Through three games, he already has a shutout and is looking like he could be an excellent half of the Marlies’ net tandem with Matt Murray. Alex Nylander has given the Marlies another elite scorer and someone who has made up for the offseason loss of Kieffer Bellows.

3. Calgary Wranglers

Dustin Wolf’s long-awaited promotion to the Calgary Flames had made the Wranglers something of an open question this season, but the Wranglers have gotten off to a 4-1-0-0 start with newcomer Devin Cooley more than handling the job in net.

Rory Kerins, Walker Duehr, and Jakob Pelletier are one-two-three in AHL scoring so far. ...

AHL Power Rankings: Nov. 6

1. Milwaukee Admirals

Even with significant offseason turnover, the Admirals are already starting to round into form. They went into Winnipeg and swept perennial rival Manitoba. Now they have a home-and-home series with Chicago that could yield more points.

Top Scorer: Vinnie Hinostroza (9 GP, 5-11--16) ...

2. Charlotte Checkers

They can skate, and they play with pace. The Checkers look like a legitimate threat to Hershey’s grip on the Atlantic Division.

Top scorer: Aidan McDonough (8 GP, 7-2--9) ...

3. Calgary Wranglers

The Wranglers are feasting during an eight-game homestand that will keep them in town for nearly three weeks. Picking up points is crucial now because eventually a demanding road schedule will beckon as it often does for Pacific Division clubs.

Top scorer: Rory Kerins (11 GP, 9-3--12) ...

AHL Power Rankings: Laval Rocket Take Over Top Spot
Nov 20, 2024
Patrick Williams ...

This week features a new number-one team -- the Laval Rocket, who have gone on an early-season tear led by some of the Montreal Canadiens' to young prospects. Another prospect-laden club, the Grand Rapids Griffins, has made a quick climb up the rankings as well. ...

1) LAVAL (+4)
What’s most encouraging for the Rocket is that it is the prospects who are doing much of the driving, the players whom the Montreal Canadiens are counting on for the future. Players like Owen Beck, Jared Davidson, Adam Engstrom, Logan Mailloux, Joshua Roy, and others are taking significant roles and thriving. And what a story Connor Hughes has been. Signed out of Switzerland, the 28-year-old is pushing for the Laval number-one job in his first pro season in North America.

2) GRAND RAPIDS (+6)
Scoring was an issue, but that has started to come for the Griffins. The Detroit Red Wings have managed Sebastian Cossa’s development methodically and patiently, and they are seeing results from him. Much like Laval, Grand Rapids is a team where the top prospects are allowed to take important roles but are also surrounded by good character veteran support.

3) CALGARY (--)
After a 6-2-0-0 homestand, the Wranglers are finally back out on the road. They got a weekend split at San Jose to open a seven-game road trip and a stretch of 10 of 14 games away from Calgary. If the Pacific Division-leading Wranglers can navigate this journey reasonably well, they could position themselves to put a significant gap between them and the rest of their division mates. ...
